Circuit/System Description

The power window system will operate any time the ignition is the ACC or RUN position. The power window system will also operate whenever the BCM is in RAP mode. The door lock window switch contains individual window switches for each power window. All windows may be controlled up and down from the door lock window switch. The individual rear passenger power window switches will only control the up and down operation of their respective power window.

Each power window contains a reversible power window motor. The direction the window travels is dependent upon the polarity of the supply voltage. By reversing polarity of the supply voltage the window motor will move up or down. Each power window motor is internally circuit breaker protected.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, command each window UP and DOWN using the appropriate window switch on the door lock window switch and the rear door window switches. Each window should perform the UP and DOWN functions from each switch.
  2. If a front window does not perform the UP/DOWN function, refer to Front Window Malfunction.
    If either rear power windows do not perform the UP/DOWN function, refer to Rear Window Malfunction.
  3. Disable and enable the rear window door switches by pressing and depressing the lockout switch on the door lock window switch. The rear door power window switches should be enabled and disabled when changing between the commanded states.
  4. If both rear window switches continue to function while disabled, refer to Lockout Switch Malfunction.
  5. Command the express down function of the driver and passenger door windows by pressing the LF and RF window switches and releasing. The driver and passenger windows should perform the express down function.
  6. If the function does not perform as specified, replace the window control module.

Circuit/System Testing

Front Window Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X2 harness connector at the door lock window switch.
  2. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal 1 and ground.
  3. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition OFF, connect the X2 harness connector at the door lock window switch and disconnect the harness connector at the window control module.
  5. Test for less than 1 ohm between the ground circuit terminal 5 and ground.
  6. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  7. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal 8 and ground.
  8. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  9. Connect a test lamp between the appropriate signal circuit terminal listed below and ground:
  10. • Terminal 12
    • Terminal 9
  11. Command the power window DOWN by using the appropriate window switch on the door lock window switch. The test lamp should illuminate during the DOWN command.
  12. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the door lock window switch.
    If the test lamp is always ON, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the door lock window switch.
  13. Connect a test lamp between the appropriate signal circuit terminal listed below and ground:
  14. • Terminal 6
    • Terminal 3
  15. Command the power window UP by using the window switch on the door lock window switch. The test lamp should illuminate during the UP command.
  16. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the door lock window switch.
    If the test lamp is always ON, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the door lock window switch.
  17. Ignition OFF, connect the harness connector at the window control module and disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate front window motor.
  18. Test for less than 5 ohms between the control circuit terminal A and ground.
  19. If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the window control module.
  20. Test for less than 5 ohms between the control circuit terminal B and ground.
  21. If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the window control module
  22. Ignition ON, connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal A and control circuit terminal B.
  23. Command the power window UP and DOWN by using the window switch on the door lock window switch. The test lamp should illuminate during the UP and DOWN command.
  24. If the test lamp is always OFF during either for the commands, test either control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the window control module.
  25. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the front window motor.

Rear Window Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the door lock window switch.
  2. Test for less than 1 ohm between the ground circuit terminal 9 and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal 10 and ground.
  5. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  6. Ignition OFF, connect the X1 harness connector at the door lock window switch and disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate rear window switch.
  7. Important: Verify the rear window switches are enabled by checking the lockout switch on the door lock window switch.

  8. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the control circuit terminal 4 and ground.
  9. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the door lock window switch.
  10. Ignition OFF, test for less than 1 ohm between the signal circuit terminal 3 and ground.
  11. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the door lock window switch.
  12. Test for less than 1 ohm between the signal circuit terminal 6 and ground.
  13. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the door lock window switch.
  14. Connect a test lamp between the signal circuit terminal 3 and the signal circuit terminal 6.
  15. Ignition ON, command the rear passenger door window UP and DOWN by using the door lock window switch. The test lamp should illuminate when commanding the UP and DOWN states.
  16. If the test lamp does not illuminate during either of the commands, test both signal circuits for a short to ground. If the circuits test normal, test or replace the door lock window switch.
  17. Ignition OFF, connect the harness connector at the rear window switch and disconnect the harness connector at the rear window motor.
  18. Test for less than 5 ohms between the control circuit terminal A and ground.
  19. If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the rear window switch.
  20. Test for less than 5 ohms between the control circuit terminal B and ground.
  21. If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the rear window switch.
  22. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal A and the control circuit terminal B.
  23. Ignition ON, command the rear window UP and DOWN by using the rear window switch. The test lamp should illuminate when commanding the UP and DOWN states.
  24. If the test lamp does not illuminate during either of the commands, test both control circuits for a short to ground. If the circuits test normal, test or replace the rear window switch.
  25. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the rear window motor.

Lockout Switch Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate rear window switch.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 4 and ground.
  3. Ignition ON, command the rear window lockout ON and OFF by pressing and depressing the lockout switch on the door lock window switch. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.
  4. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the door lock window switch.
    If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the door lock window switch.
  5. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the rear window switch.

Component Testing

Door Lock Window Switch

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 and X2 harness connectors at the door lock window switch.
  2. Test for less than 2 ohms between the control terminal 11 and the ignition terminal 10 with the lockout switch in the ENABLE position.
  3. If greater than the specified value, replace the door lock window switch
  4. Test for infinite resistance between the control terminal 11 and the ignition circuit terminal 10 with the lockout switch in the DISABLE position.
  5. If less than the specified value, replace the door lock window switch.
  6. With the switch in the INACTIVE position, test for infinite resistance between the control terminals listed below and the ignition terminal 10:
  7. • Control terminal 8
    • Control terminal 7
    • Control terminal 12
    • Control terminal 13
    If less than the specified value, replace the door lock window switch.
  8. With the switch in the UP position, test for less than 2 ohms between the control terminals listed below and the ignition terminal 10:
  9. • LR window switch control terminal 8
    • RR window switch control terminal 13
    If greater than the specified range, replace the door lock window switch.
  10. With the switch in the DOWN position, test for less than 2 ohms between the control terminals listed below and the ignition terminal 10:
  11. • LR window switch control terminal 7
    • RR window switch control terminal 12
    If greater than the specified range, replace the door lock window switch.

Passenger Rear Window Switch

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate rear window switch.
  2. Test for infinite resistance between the control terminals 1 and 5 and the control terminal 4 with the switch in the INACTIVE position.
  3. If less than the specified value, replace the rear window switch.
  4. Test for less than 2 ohms between the control terminal 1 and the control terminal 4 with the switch in the UP position.
  5. If greater than the specified range, replace the rear window switch.
  6. Test for less than 2 ohms between the control terminal 5 and the control terminal 4 with the switch in the DOWN position.
  7. If greater than the specified range, replace the rear window switch

Window Motor

    Important: When performing the following tests, make sure that the window motor is not all ready in the position the test is attempting to produce.

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate window motor
  2. Install a 20A fused jumper wire between the control terminal A and 12V. Momentarily install a jumper wire between the control terminal B and ground. The window motor should perform the UP/DOWN function.
  3. If the function does not perform as specified, replace the window motor.
  4. Reverse the jumper wires; the window motor should perform the DOWN/UP function.
  5. If the function does not perform as specified, replace the window motor.

Circuit/System Description

When the ignition switch is in the RUN or ACCY position, or retained accessory power (RAP) is enabled and the driver or passenger window switch is pressed in the down position, voltage is applied to the appropriate window motor causing that window to open. When the driver or passenger window switch is pulled in the up position, voltage is applied to the appropriate window motor in the opposite direction causing that window to close.

The driver master control contains a rear window lockout switch which disconnects the battery positive voltage supply to both rear passenger door window switches, disabling them. The RR and LR window switches on the driver master control will continue to function normally.

Diagnostic Aids

The auto reverse feature can be activated due to excessive physical resistance in the window regulator assembly. Ensure proper mechanical operation of the regulator assembly prior to replacing electrical components.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, command the windows UP and DOWN using the window switches on the window/door lock switch and each rear window switch. Each window should perform the UP and DOWN functions from each switch.
  2. If a front window does not perform the UP/DOWN function, refer to Front Window Malfunction.
    If either rear power window does not perform the UP/DOWN function, refer to Rear Window Malfunction.
  3. Disable and enable the rear window door switches by pressing and depressing the lockout switch on the window/door lock switch. The rear door power window switches should be enabled and disabled when changing between the commanded states.
  4. If both rear window switches continue to function while disabled, refer to Lockout Switch Malfunction.
  5. Command the express up and express down function of each front door window by pressing and pulling the left front and right front window switches past the first detent and releasing. Each window should perform the express up and express down function.
  6. If a window does not perform as specified, refer to Window Motor Programming - Express Function.

Circuit/System Testing

Front Window Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X2 harness connector at the window/door lock switch.
  2. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal 1 and ground.
  3. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition OFF, connect the X2 harness connector at the window/door lock switch and disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate front window motor.
  5. Test for less than 1 ohm between the ground circuit terminal 4 and ground.
  6. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  7. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 3 and ground.
  8. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  9. Verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal 2 and ground.
  10. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  11. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 6 and ground.
  12. Ignition ON, command the front window DOWN by using the appropriate window switch. The test lamp should illuminate when commanding the DOWN state.
  13. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the window/door lock switch.
    If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the window/door lock switch.
  14. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 1 and ground.
  15. Command the front window UP by using the window switch. The test lamp should illuminate when commanding the UP state.
  16. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the window/door lock switch.
    If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the window/door lock switch.
  17. If all circuits tests normal, test or replace the front window motor.

Rear Window Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the door lock window switch.
  2. Test for less than 1 ohm between the ground circuit terminal 9 and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal 10 and ground.
  5. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  6. Ignition OFF, connect the X1 harness connector at the door lock window switch and disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate rear window switch.

  8. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the control circuit terminal 4 and ground.

  13. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the door lock window switch.
  14. Connect a test lamp between the signal circuit terminal 3 and the signal circuit terminal 6.
  15. Ignition ON, command the rear window UP and DOWN by using the appropriate window switch on the door lock window switch. The test lamp should illuminate when commanding the UP and DOWN states.
  16. If the test lamp does not illuminate during either of the commands, test both signal circuits for a short to ground. If the circuits test normal, test or replace the door lock window switch.
  17. Ignition OFF, connect the harness connector at the rear window switch and disconnect the harness connector at the rear window motor.
  18. Test for less than 5 ohms between the control circuit terminal A and ground.
  19. If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the rear window switch.
  20. Test for less than 5 ohms between the control circuit terminal B and ground.
  21. If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the rear window switch.
  22. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal A and the control circuit terminal B.
  23. Ignition ON, command the rear window UP and DOWN by using the rear window switch. The test lamp should illuminate when commanding the UP and DOWN states.
  24. If the test lamp does not illuminate during either of the commands, test both control circuits for a short to ground. If the circuits test normal, test or replace the rear window switch.
  25. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the rear window motor.

Lockout Switch Malfunction

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate rear window switch.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 4 and ground.
  3. Ignition ON, command the rear window lockout ON and OFF by pressing and depressing the lockout switch on the door lock window switch. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.
  4. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the door lock window switch.
    If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, test or replace the door lock window switch.
  5. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the rear window switch.

Component Testing

Door Lock Window Switch

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 and X2 harness connectors at the door lock window switch.
  2. Test for less than 2 ohms between the control terminal 11 and the ignition terminal 10 with the lockout switch in the ENABLE position.
  3. If greater than the specified value, replace the door lock window switch
  4. Test for infinite resistance between the control terminal 11 and the ignition circuit terminal 10 with the lockout switch in the DISABLE position.
  5. If less than the specified value, replace the door lock window switch.
  6. With the switch in the INACTIVE position, test for infinite resistance between the control terminals listed below and the ignition terminal 10:
  7. • Control terminal 8
    • Control terminal 7
    • Control terminal 12
    • Control terminal 13
    If less than the specified value, replace the door lock window switch.
  8. With the switch in the UP position, test for less than 2 ohms between the control terminals listed below and the ignition terminal 10:
  9. • LR window switch control terminal 8
    • RR window switch control terminal 13
    If greater than the specified range, replace the door lock window switch.
  10. With the switch in the DOWN position, test for less than 2 ohms between the control terminals listed below and the ignition terminal 10:
  11. • LR window switch control terminal 7
    • RR window switch control terminal 12
    If greater than the specified range, replace the door lock window switch.

Passenger Rear Window Switch

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate rear window switch.
  2. Test for infinite resistance between the control terminals 1 and 5 and the control terminal 4 with the switch in the INACTIVE position.
  3. If less than the specified value, replace the rear window switch.
  4. Test for less than 2 ohms between the control terminal 1 and the control terminal 4 with the switch in the UP position.
  5. If greater than the specified range, replace the rear window switch.
  6. Test for less than 2 ohms between the control terminal 5 and the control terminal 4 with the switch in the DOWN position.
  7. If greater than the specified range, replace the rear window switch

Rear Window Motor

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate rear window motor.
  2. Install a 20A fused jumper wire between one of the control terminals and 12V. Momentarily install a jumper wire between the other control terminal and ground. Reverse the jumper wires at least two times, the rear window motor should perform the UP/DOWN functions.
  3. If it does not perform as specified, replace the rear window motor.
