Possible Cause

Correction

Air is present in the system.

  1. Add fluid to the pump reservoir.
  2. Bleed the system.
  3. Inspect the hose connections for the proper torque. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications

The steering gear mounting is loose.

Tighten the attaching bolts to the specifications. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications .

Wear is present in the steering linkage joints.

Replace any loose parts. Refer to Steering Linkage Inspection in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).

The front wheel bearings are not in adjustment or are worn.

Adjust the bearings, or replace the bearings with new components as needed. Refer to Wheel Bearing Adjustment in Front Suspension.

The steering gear is not in adjustment.

Adjust to the specifications. Refer to Steering Gear Worm Gear Thrust Bearing Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle or Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Over-Center Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle .

Wear or damage is present in the steering gear.

Replace the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement .
