Removal Procedure
- Place a drain pan below the steering gear.
- Disconnect the hoses from the steering gear.
- Cap the ends of the hoses and the gear fittings in order to prevent the entrance of dirt.
- Mark the Intermediate shaft to steering gear alignment before removal.
- Disconnect the intermediate shaft. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard and Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt.
- Remove the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).
- Remove the steering gear frame bolts (3) and the steering gear (1).
Raise up the hoses in order to prevent oil drainage.
Installation Procedure
- Place the steering gear (1) in position.
- Align the marks made during the removal in order to guide the stub shaft into the cardan joint.
- Install the steering gear-to-frame bolts (3).
- Connect the intermediate shaft. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard and Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt.
- Install the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).
- Remove the caps from the steering gear and hoses.
- Connect the hoses to the steering gear.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 135 N·m (98 lb ft).
Tighten
Tighten the hose fittings to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).
