Tools Required

    • J 24319-B Universal Steering Linkage Puller
    • J 29107-A Pitman Arm Puller
    • J 6632-01 Pitman Arm Puller
    • J 29193 Steering Linkage Installer (12 mm)

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
  2. Important: Do not free the ball stud by using a pickle fork or a wedge-type tool. Damage to the seal or bushing may result.

  3. Remove the connecting rod nut (2) from the pitman arm (3).

  4. Object Number: 310589  Size: SH
  5. Using the J 24319-B , separate the connecting rod from the pitman arm .

  6. Object Number: 339888  Size: SH
  7. Remove the pitman arm nut and washer.
  8. Mark the pitman arm and the pitman shaft in order to properly align at reassembly.

    Notice: Do not hammer on the pitman arm, pitman arm shaft or puller. Damage to the pitman arm or steering gear may result.

  9. Remove the pitman arm using the J 6632-01 or the J 29107-A .
  10. Clean the threads on the ball stud and the ball stud nut.
  11. Inspect the ball stud threads for damage.
  12. Inspect the ball stud seals for excessive wear.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: If a clamp-type pitman arm is used, spread the pitman arm just enough with a wedge to slip the arm onto the pitman shaft. Do not spread the pitman arm more than required to slip over the pitman shaft with hand pressure. Do not hammer. Damage to the steering gear may result.

  1. Install the pitman arm on the pitman shaft.
  2. Line up the marks made at removal.

    Use a new torque prevailing nut.

  3. Install the pitman arm washer and nut.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the pitman arm retaining nut to 250 N·m (184 lb ft).

  5. Connect the connecting rod (4) to the pitman arm (3) ball stud.
  6. Make sure the seal is on the stud.

    Tighten
    Tighten the J 29193 or J 29194 to 54 N·m (40 lb ft) in order to seat the tapers.

  7. Remove the J 29193 . Install a new torque prevailing nut.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the connecting rod nut to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  9. Remove the safety stands.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
