Removal Procedure

  1. Release the parking brake.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel.
  4. • For vehicles with steel wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Pontiac and Export vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  5. Mark the relationship of the drum to the hub.
  6. Remove and discard the retaining clip (if applicable).

  7. Object Number: 390075  Size: SH
  8. Remove the brake drum.
  9. If the brake drum does not come off easily, perform the following steps:
  10. 7.1. Loosen the parking brake cable.
    7.2. Remove the access hole plug from the backing plate.

    7.3. Insert a flat-bladed tool (2) through the backing plate access hole in order to disengage the self adjuster.
    7.4. Insert another flat-bladed tool through the same backing plate access hole in order to loosen the adjuster screw.
    7.5. Install the access hole plug in order to prevent dirt or contamination from entering the drum brake.
    7.6. Apply a small amount of penetrating oil around the brake drum center hole.
    7.7. Remove the brake drum.

Installation Procedure

  1. Align the marks on the brake drum and the hub made during the removal procedure.

  2. Object Number: 390075  Size: SH
  3. Install the brake drum.
  4. Install the tire and wheel.
  5. • For vehicles with steel wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Pontiac and Export vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
