J 36857 Engine Lift Brackets

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 310799  Size: SH
  1. Open the hood.
  2. Place fender covers over both fenders.
  3. Raise the hood to the service position, perform the following:
  4. 3.1. Remove the hood hinge bolts (1).
    3.2. Raise the hood until vertical.
    3.3. Install the hood hinge bolts until snug in the service position (2).

  5. Loosen the clamps at the throttle body and air cleaner.
  6. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct.

  7. Object Number: 662092  Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  9. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  10. Remove the ignition coils. Refer to Ignition Coil Replacement in Engine Controls - 8.1 L.

  11. Object Number: 300360  Size: SH
  12. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief in Engine Controls - 8.1 L.
  13. Disconnect the fuel feed and return pipes (1, 2) from the fuel rail. Refer to Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service in Engine Controls - 8.1 L.
  14. Remove the air conditioning (A/C) compressor. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  15. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  17. Disconnect the throttle actuator control (TAC) module electrical connector (1).
  18. Remove the vacuum lines from the engine, as required.
  19. Remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve adapter. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Bracket Replacement in Engine Controls - 8.1 L.

  21. Remove the ground cable bolt at the engine block.
  22. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  23. Remove the engine electrical harness and tie out of the way.
  24. Raise and suitably support the vehicle safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  25. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  26. Remove the hoses from the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Cooler Pipe/Hose Replacement in Power Steering System.
  27. Remove the exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  28. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.

  29. Object Number: 394446  Size: SH
  30. Remove the torque converter bolts, if equipped.
  31. Remove the clutch pressure plate bolts, if equipped.
  32. Remove the bolts from the transmission to the engine.
  33. • For the automatic transmission, refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission - 4L80-E or Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission - Allison.
    • For the manual transmission, refer to Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission - NV 4500 or Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission - ZF S6-650.
  34. Remove the engine oil cooler lines from the engine block. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  35. Object Number: 66457  Size: SH
  36. Attach J 36857 to the rear of the right cylinder head and to the front of the left cylinder head.
  37. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  38. Install the attaching bolt and washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N 15650963.
  39. Tighten
    Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  40. Remove the engine mount heat shield bolts and shields.

  41. Object Number: 750192  Size: SH
  42. Remove the engine mount to engine mount bracket bolts.
  43. Remove the engine using a suitable lifting devise.
  44. Install the engine onto a suitable engine stand.
  45. Remove the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  47. Remove the A/C compressor/power steering pump bracket from the cylinder head.
  48. Remove the lift brackets from the cylinder head.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 66457  Size: SH
  1. Attach J 36857 to the rear of the right cylinder head and to the front of the left cylinder head.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the attaching bolt and washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N 15650963.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  5. Install the air compressor/power steering mounting bracket to the engine block.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering pump bracket bolts and nut to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  7. Install the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  8. Remove the engine using a suitable lifting devise.
  9. Install the engine into the vehicle.

  11. Install the engine mount to engine mount bracket bolts.

  12. Object Number: 750194  Size: SH
  13. Install the engine mount heat shield and bolts.
  14. Remove the engine lift hooks from the cylinder heads.
  15. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands.
  16. Install the engine oil cooler lines to the engine block. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  17. Object Number: 394446  Size: SH
  18. Install the bolts from the transmission to the engine.
  19. • For the automatic transmission, refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission - 4L80-E or Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission - Allison.
    • For the manual transmission, refer to Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission - NV 4500 or Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission - ZF S6-650.
  20. Install the clutch pressure plate bolts, if equipped.
  21. Install the torque converter bolts, if equipped.
  22. Install the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  23. Install the exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  24. Install the hoses to the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Cooler Pipe/Hose Replacement in Power Steering System.
  25. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  26. Lower the vehicle.
  27. Route the engine electrical harness.
  28. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  29. Object Number: 663475  Size: SH
  30. Install the ground cable bolt at the engine block.
  31. Tighten
    Tighten the engine wiring harness bolt to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

  32. Install the EGR valve adapter. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Bracket Replacement in Engine Controls - 8.1 L.
  33. Install the vacuum lines to the engine.

  34. Object Number: 751290  Size: SH
  35. Connect the TAC module electrical connector (1).
  36. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  37. Install the A/C compressor. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.

  39. Disconnect the fuel feed and return pipes (1, 2) from the fuel rail.
  40. Install the ignition coils. Refer to Ignition Coil Replacement in Engine Controls - 8.1 L..

  41. Object Number: 662092  Size: SH
  42. Connect the positive battery cable.
  43. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.

  44. Object Number: 700979  Size: SH
  45. Install the air cleaner outlet duct.
  46. Tighten the clamps at the throttle body and air cleaner.
  47. Remove fender covers from both fenders.

  49. Remove the hood hinge bolts from the service position (2).
  50. Lower the hood to the normal position.
  51. Install the hood hinge bolts.
  52. Tighten
    Tighten the hood hinge bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  53. Before starting a new engine or one that has been repaired, complete the following procedure.
  54. 38.1. Fill the engine with the proper quantity and grade of oil.
    38.2. Add engine oil supplement GM U.S. P/N 1052367, Canada P/N 992869, or equivalent to the engine oil.
    38.3. Remove the fuel pump fuse and disconnect the coil harness connectors, then crank the engine until oil pressure is present.
    38.4. Crank the engine several times. Listen for any unusual noises or evidence that any of the parts are binding.
    38.5. Install the fuel pump fuse and connect the coil harness connectors and start the engine and listen for unusual noises.
    38.6. Check the vehicle oil pressure gauge or light and confirm that the engine has acceptable oil pressure. If necessary install an oil pressure gauge and measure the oil pressure.
    38.7. Run the engine at about 1000 RPM's until the engine has reached normal operating temperature.
    38.8. Inspect for oil and or coolant leaks while the engine is running.
    38.9. Stop the engine and perform a final inspection for the proper engine oil and coolant levels.
    38.10. The fianl step is to perform the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor variation learn procedure. Refer to Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn in Engine Controls - 8.1 L.
