Power Steering Pump Replacement L18 with C6500, C7500, C8500

Removal Procedure

Important: Always clean the connectors and lubricate the tool end in power steering fluid when inserting into the coupling.

Important: Check all power steering system quick connect connections by trying to pull the hose assembly out of the fitting using a firm hand tug. Repeat the step if the connector is pulled out of the male fitting. If the problem persists, inspect and replace the hose assembly if the quick connect is damaged.

  1. Remove the steering hoses at the pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement.
  2. Cap the hoses in order to prevent dirt from entering the system.

  3. Object Number: 731690  Size: SH
  4. Remove the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement.

  5. Object Number: 731612  Size: SH
  6. Remove the pump retaining bolts.
  7. Remove the pump.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 731612  Size: SH
  1. Install the power steering pump.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the pump retaining bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the pump retaining bolts to 70 N·m (52 lb ft).

  5. Install the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement.

  6. Object Number: 731625  Size: SH
  7. Install the power steering hoses. Refer to Power Steering Hose Quick Connect Fitting Replacement
  8. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.

  6. Remove the pump retaining bolts.
  7. Remove the pump.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 798057  Size: SH
  1. Install the power steering pump.
  2. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  3. Install the pump retaining bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the pump retaining bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  5. Install the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement.
  6. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement for the 8.1L engine.

  7. Object Number: 602067  Size: SH
  8. Install the power steering hose connections. Refer to Power Steering Hose Quick Connect Fitting Replacement.
  9. Install the power steering fluid. Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid.
  10. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.

  6. Remove the pump retaining bolts.
  7. Remove the pump.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the power steering pump.
  2. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  3. Install the pump retaining bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the pump retaining bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  7. Install the power steering hoses (1). Refer to Power Steering Hose Quick Connect Fitting Replacement.
  8. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.

Power Steering Pump Replacement LG4/LF8 with JE3

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1765587  Size: SH
  1. Remove the power steering pump pulley gear nut (1), washer (2), and the gear (3) from the pump.

  2. Object Number: 218952  Size: SH

    Note: Always clean the connectors and lubricate the tool end in power steering fluid when inserting the tool end into the coupling.

    Note: Check all power steering system quick connect connections by trying to pull the hose assembly out of the fitting. Use a firm hand tug. Repeat the step if the connector is pulled out of the male fitting. If the problem persists, inspect and replace the hose assembly if the quick connect is damaged.

    Note: 

       • Cap the hoses in order to keep dirt out of the system.
       • Tag the hose locations (1, 2).

  3. Remove the power steering hoses at the pump. Refer to Power Steering Fluid Reservoir Outlet Hose Replacement and Power Brake Booster Inlet Hose Replacement.

  4. Object Number: 798050  Size: SH
  5. Remove the power steering pump bolts and nut.
  6. Remove the power steering pump.
  7. Remove the power steering pump gasket.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 798050  Size: SH
  1. Install the power steering pump gasket.
  2. Install the power steering pump.
  3. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  4. Install the power steering pump bolts and nut.
  5. Tighten

        • Tighten the bolts to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).
        • Tighten the nut to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
  6. Install the power steering hoses. Refer to Power Steering Fluid Reservoir Outlet Hose Replacement and Power Brake Booster Inlet Hose Replacement.
  7. Note the hose locations.

    Note: The air compressor crankshaft gear nut must reach the listed torque or the gear could come loose.

  8. Position the gear (3), the washer (2), and the nut (1) to the pump.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the gear nut to 235 N·m (173 lb ft).

  10. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.

Power Steering Pump Replacement LG4/LF8 and JE4

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 218959  Size: SH

    Note: Always clean the connectors and lubricate the tool end in power steering fluid when inserting the tool end into the coupling.

    Note: Test all power steering system quick connect connections by trying to pull the hose assembly out of the fitting. Use a firm hand tug. Repeat the step if the connector is pulled out of the male fitting. If the problem persists, inspect and replace the hose assembly if the quick connect is damaged.

    Note: Mark the hoses for proper installation.

    Cap the hoses to keep dirt out of the power steering system.

  1. Remove the power steering hoses (1, 2) at the pump. Refer to Power Steering Fluid Reservoir Outlet Hose Replacement and Power Brake Booster Inlet Hose Replacement.

  2. Object Number: 798055  Size: SH
  3. Remove the power steering pump bolts.
  4. Remove the power steering pump.
  5. Remove the power steering pump gasket.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 798055  Size: SH
  1. Install the power steering pump gasket.
  2. Install the power steering pump.
  3. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  4. Install the power steering pump bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).

  6. Install the steering hoses (1, 2). Refer to Power Steering Fluid Reservoir Outlet Hose Replacement and Power Brake Booster Inlet Hose Replacement.
  7. Note the hose locations.

  8. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.

Power Steering Pump Replacement LG5/LF6 and JE3

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the power steering pump pulley gear nut (1), washer (2), and the gear (3) from the pump.

  2. Object Number: 218952  Size: SH

    Note: Always clean the connectors and lubricate the tool end in power steering fluid when inserting the tool end into the coupling.

    Note: Check all power steering system quick connect connections by trying to pull the hose assembly out of the fitting. Use a firm hand tug. Repeat the step if the connector is pulled out of the male fitting. If the problem persists, inspect and replace the hose assembly if the quick connect is damaged.

    Note: 

       • Cap the hoses in order to keep dirt out of the system.
       • Tag the hose locations (1, 2).

  3. Remove the power steering hoses at the pump. Refer to Power Steering Hose Quick Connect Fitting Replacement.

  4. Object Number: 227953  Size: SH
  5. Remove the following components:
  6. • The bolts (4)
    • The washers (3)
    • The pump (2)
    • The gasket (1)

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 227953  Size: SH
  1. Install the gasket (1).
  2. Install the pump (2).
  3. Install the washers (3).
  4. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  5. Install the bolts (4).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the pump mounting bolts to 70 N·m (52 lb ft).

  7. Install the power steering hoses. Refer to Power Steering Hose Quick Connect Fitting Replacement.
  8. Note the hose locations (1, 2).

       • Tag the hose locations (1, 2).

  3. Remove the following components:
  4. • The bolts (2)
    • The washers (3)
    • The pump (1)
    • The gasket (4)

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the gasket (4).
  2. Install the pump (1).
  3. Install the washers (3).
  4. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  5. Install the bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the pump mounting bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
