Important: A short to ground will cause an open fuse(s). Before performing this diagnostic procedure, inspect the fuse(s) for an open.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  2. Place the transaxle in the REVERSE position.
  3. Backprobe the right IP junction block connector C3 with a test lamp between terminal A4 (left lamp) or terminal C3 (right lamp) and ground.

Does the test lamp light?

  1. Disconnect the inoperative rear lamp assembly connector.
  2. Connect a test lamp between terminal A (Pontiac) or terminal B (Olds) of the left rear lamp assembly connector or terminal E (Pontiac) or terminal B (Olds) of the right rear lamp assembly connector and ground.

Does the test lamp light?

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 5

Replace the right IP junction block.

Is the repair complete?

--

Go to Backup Lamp System Check

Connect a test lamp between terminal C and terminal A (Pontiac) or terminal B (Olds) of the left rear lamp assembly connector or between terminal C and terminal E (Pontiac) or terminal B (Olds) of the right rear lamp assembly connector.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 6

Go to Step 7

Repair the open in CKT 24 between the right IP junction block and the left or right rear lamp assembly. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Is the repair complete?

Go to Backup Lamp System Check

Replace the inoperative rear lamp assembly. Refer to Tail Lamp Replacement .

Repair the open in CKT 750 between the left rear lamp assembly and ground splice pack G401 or the open in CKT 850 (Pontiac) or CKT 750 (Olds) between the right rear lamp assembly and ground splice pack G402 (Pontiac) or ground splice pack G401 (Olds). Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
