Ignition and Start Switch Replacement RHD

Removal Procedure

Caution: When you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, you must disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

  1. Apply the park brake.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable, in order to maintain the key code. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  3. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  4. Remove the right instrument panel end cap. Refer to Instrument Panel Outer Trim Cover Replacement .
  5. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement .
  6. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition switch.
  7. Remove the lamp socket from the ignition switch.
  8. Turn the ignition to the run position.
  9. Depress the release button (1) for the park lock cable and pull the cable, in order to disconnect the park lock cable from the ignition switch.
  10. The release button (1) is located on the bottom of the ignition switch at the 6 o'clock position.

  11. Look through the IP endcap opening and locate the ignition lock cylinder retaining tab (3).
  12. The ignition lock cylinder retaining tab (3) is located on the right lower side of the ignition switch assembly (2).

  13. Using a flat-bladed tool, depress and hold the ignition lock cylinder retaining tab (3)
  14. Remove the ignition lock cylinder from the IP.
  15. Remove the ignition switch fastener (1).

  17. Looking through the opening next to the steering column, remove the fastener (2) from the ignition switch (2)
  18. Remove the ignition switch assembly from the IP.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the ignition switch (2) to the IP retainer.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Through the opening next to the steering column, install the ignition switch fastener (1).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the fastener to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  5. Through the IP endcap opening , install the ignition switch fastener (1).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the fastener to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  7. Install the park lock cable (1) to the ignition switch.
  8. Connect the electrical connectors.
  9. Install the lamp socket to the ignition switch.

  10. Object Number: 291659  Size: SH
  11. With the key installed in the ignition lock cylinder (1) insert the ignition lock cylinder (1) into the IP opening (2).
  12. The lock cylinder retaining tab (3) will produce an audible click, when fully engaged.

  13. Using light force, pull on the lock cylinder in order to ensure the lock cylinder is engaged.
  14. Turn the ignition to LOCK, then remove the key.
  15. Install the right IP endcap. Refer to Instrument Panel Outer Trim Cover Replacement .
  16. Install the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement .
  17. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
  18. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  19. Inspect the ignition switch for proper operation in all positions.
  20. Release the park brake.

Ignition and Start Switch Replacement LHD

Removal Procedure

  1. Apply the park brake.

  3. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  4. Remove the radio or the navigation display module. Refer to Radio Replacement in Entertainment, or Navigation Display Module Replacement in Navigation.
  5. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement .
  6. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition switch.
  7. Remove the lamp socket from the ignition switch.
  8. Turn the ignition to the run position.
  9. Depress the release button (1) on the park lock cable and pull the cable, in order to disconnect the park lock cable from the ignition switch.
  10. The release button (1) is located on the bottom of the ignition switch at the 6 o'clock position.

  11. Look through the radio/ navigation display opening, and locate the ignition lock cylinder retaining tab (3).
  12. The ignition lock cylinder retaining tab (3) is located on the right lower side of the ignition switch assembly (2).

  13. Using a flat-bladed too, depress and hold the ignition lock cylinder retaining tab (3)
  14. Remove the ignition lock cylinder from the IP.
  15. Remove the ignition switch fastener (1).

  17. Looking through the opening next to the steering column, remove the fastener (2) from the ignition switch (2)
  18. Remove the ignition switch assembly from the IP.

Installation Procedure

  18. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  19. Inspect the ignition switch for proper operation in all positions.
