Electronic Column Lock Module - Assemble - Off Vehicle Power Tilt\\Telescope-Column Shift
Tools Required
J 41396 Park Lock
Cable Pliers
- Slide the switch mounting
bracket (2) onto the steering column.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install 1 pan
head tapping screw (1).
Tighten
Tighten the pan head tapping screw to 7 N·m (62 lb in).
- Install the lock bolt
spring (3) into the switch mounting bracket (5).
- Position the cutout in the lock bolt assembly (4) at the
3 o'clock position.
- Install the lock bolt assembly (4) into the switch mounting
bracket (5).
- Push the lock bolt assembly (4) into the switch mounting
bracket (5) until the lock bolt assembly is flush with the switch mounting
bracket (5).
- Align the lock module assembly (2) with the switch mounting
bracket (5).
- Screw the 3 pan head tapping screws (1) into the
lock module assembly (2).
Tighten
• | Tighten the pan head tapping screws to 7 N·m (62 lb in). |
• | Tighten the pan head tapping screw to 2.3 N·m (20 lb in). |
- Install the ignition and key alarm switch assembly and the coded
key controller only. Refer to
Ignition and Key Alarm Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle
.
- Install the steering column lock cylinder set only. Refer to
Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement - On Vehicle
.
- Place steering column
lock cylinder set into the OFF position.
- Place the shift lever clevis into the park position.
- Press the locking tab on the end of the park lock cable assembly (1)
into the slot in the lock module assembly.
- Adjust the park lock cable
assembly (1) by performing the following steps:
14.1. | Use the gear shift lever to place the steering column in the park
position. |
14.2. | Insert the key into the ignition switch. |
14.3. | Place the steering column lock cylinder set in the OFF or LOCK
position. |
14.4. | Remove the key from the ignition switch. |
14.5. | Unlock the adjuster ring on the park lock cable assembly using J 41396
. |
14.6. | Pull on the park lock cable until the park lock latch contacts
the gear shift lever. |
14.7. | Release the park lock cable. |
14.8. | Lock the adjuster ring securely in place on the park lock cable
assembly using J 41396
. |
- Inspect the park lock cable assembly by performing the following
steps.
15.1. | Insert the key into the ignition switch. |
15.2. | Place the steering column lock cylinder set in the OFF or LOCK
position. The gear shift lever must remain locked in the park position. |
15.3. | Place the steering column lock cylinder set in the run position. |
15.4. | Place the gear shift lever in the neutral position. |
15.5. | With the gear shift lever in the neutral position, the steering
column lock cylinder set must remain out of the OFF or LOCK position. |
15.6. | Place the gear shift lever in the park position. |
15.7. | Put the steering column lock cylinder set in the OFF or LOCK position. |
15.8. | Remove the key from the ignition switch. |
- Install the upper tilt head components. Refer to
Turn Signal Cancel Cam and Upper Bearing Inner Race - Assemble - Off Vehicle

- Slide the switch
mounting bracket (2) onto the steering column.
- Install 1 pan head tapping screw (1).
Tighten
Tighten the pan head tapping screw to 7 N·m (62 lb in).
- Install the lock bolt
spring (3) into the switch mounting bracket (5).
- Position the cutout in the lock bolt assembly (4) at the
3 o'clock position.
- Install the lock bolt assembly (4) into the switch mounting
bracket (5).
- Push the lock bolt assembly (4) into the switch mounting
bracket until the lock bolt assembly is flush with the switch mounting bracket (5).
- Align the lock module assembly (2) with the switch mounting
bracket.
- Screw the 3 pan head tapping screws (1) into the
lock module assembly (2).
Tighten
Tighten the pan head tapping screws to 7 N·m (62 lb in).
Tighten
Tighten the pan head tapping screws to 2.3 N·m(20 lb in).
- Install the ignition and key alarm switch assembly, the electric
park lock and the coded key controller only. Refer to
Ignition and Key Alarm Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle
.
- Install the upper tilt head components. Refer to
Turn Signal Cancel Cam and Upper Bearing Inner Race - Assemble - Off Vehicle
.
- Install the steering column lock cylinder set only

- Install the lock bolt
spring (3) into the steering column tilt head assembly (5).

tilt head assembly (5).

Tighten
Tighten the 3 pan head tapping screws to 7 N·m (62 lb in).
Important: The lower tapping screw is also used to attach the electric park lock.
- Install the ignition and key alarm and the coded key controller
only. Refer to
Ignition and Key Alarm Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle

- Install the steering column lock cylinder set. Refer to
Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement - On Vehicle
.
- Install the electric park lock. Refer to
Electric Park Lock Module - Assemble - Off Vehicle
.
- Install the upper tilt head components. Refer to
Turn Signal Cancel Cam and Upper Bearing Inner Race - Assemble - Off Vehicle

- Install the lock bolt
spring (3) into the steering column tilt head assembly (5).
- Position the cutout in the lock bolt assembly (4) at the
3 o'clock position.
- Install the lock bolt assembly (4) into the steering column
tilt head assembly (5).
- Push the lock bolt assembly (4) into the steering column
tilt head assembly (5) until the lock bolt assembly is flush with the
steering column tilt head assembly (5).
- Align the lock module assembly (2) with the steering column
tilt head assembly (5).

- Install the ignition and key alarm switch assembly and the coded
key controller only. Refer to

- Install the steering column lock cylinder set only. Refer to
Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement - On Vehicle
.
- Place steering column
lock cylinder set into the OFF position.
- Place the shift lever clevis into the park position.
- Press the locking tab on the end of the park lock cable assembly (1)
into the slot in the lock module assembly.
- Adjust the park lock cable
assembly (1) by performing the following steps:
12.1. | Use the gear shift lever to place the steering column in the park
position. |
12.2. | Insert the key into the ignition switch. |
12.3. | Place the steering column lock cylinder set in the OFF or LOCK
position. |
12.4. | Remove the key from the ignition switch. |
12.5. | Unlock the adjuster ring on the park lock cable assembly using J 41396
. |
12.6. | Pull on the park lock cable until the park lock latch contacts
the gear shift lever. |
12.7. | Release the park lock cable. |
12.8. | Lock the adjuster ring securely in place on the park lock cable
assembly using J 41396
. |
- Inspect the park lock cable assembly by performing the following
steps:
13.1. | Insert the key into the ignition switch. |
13.2. | Place the steering column lock cylinder set in the OFF or LOCK
position. The gear shift lever must remain locked in the park position. |
13.3. | Place the steering column lock cylinder set in the run position. |
13.4. | Place the gear shift lever in the neutral position. |
13.5. | With the gear shift lever in the neutral position, the steering
column lock cylinder set must remain out of the OFF or LOCK position. |
13.6. | Place the gear shift lever in the park position. |
13.7. | Put the steering column lock cylinder set in the OFF or LOCK position. |
13.8. | Remove the key from the ignition switch. |
- Install the upper tilt head components. Refer to
Turn Signal Cancel Cam and Upper Bearing Inner Race - Assemble - Off Vehicle
