Removal Procedure
- Remove the engine assembly. Refer to Engine Replacement .
- Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
- Remove the left cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement - Left Side .
- Remove the right cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement - Right Side .
- Remove the camshaft sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls - 5.7L.
- Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
- Remove the valve lifter guide bolts (211).
- Remove the valve lifters and guides. Refer to Valve Lifter Removal .
- Rotate the engine in order to align the timing marks.
- Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts.
- Remove the timing chain from the camshaft sprocket, and allow the chain to rest on the crankshaft sprocket.
- Remove the camshaft retainer bolts and retainer.
- Remove the camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Removal .
- If the camshaft bearings need replacement, remove the rear engine cover and gasket. Refer to Engine Rear Cover Removal .
- Remove the camshaft bearings if required. Refer to Camshaft Bearing Removal .
Important: Rear cover removal is not required, if the camshaft bearings are not being replaced.
Installation Procedure
- Install the NEW camshaft bearings, if previously removed. Refer to Camshaft Bearing Installation .
- Install the rear engine cover. Refer to Engine Rear Cover Installation .
- Install the camshaft, the camshaft retainer, and the bolts. Refer to Camshaft Installation .
- Install the timing chain to the camshaft sprocket.
- Install the camshaft sprocket and bolts to the camshaft. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprockets Installation .
- Ensure that the timing marks are aligned.
- Install the valve lifters, valve guides, and bolts (211). Refer to Valve Lifter Installation .
- Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Installation .
- Install the camshaft sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls - 5.7L.
- Install the right cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Installation - Right Side .
- Install the left cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Installation - Left Side .
- Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Installation .
- Install the engine assembly. Refer to Engine Replacement .
- Change the engine oil and filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
- Fill the cooling system to the proper level. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities in Maintenance and Lubrication.
- Check the engine for fluid leaks.
