Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side 3.8L

Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 910984 Size: SH
  1. Remove the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement.
  2. Remove the exhaust crossover heat shield nuts (1).
  3. Remove the exhaust crossover heat shield (2).

    4. Object Number: 911162 Size: SH
  4. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe studs (3) from the right exhaust manifold.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.

    6. Object Number: 911163 Size: SH
  6. Remove the exhaust manifold pipe stud nuts (2) and the catalytic converter pipe (3) from the right exhaust manifold.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Rotate the engine to access the right side of the engine. Refer to Rotating the Engine for Service Access.

  9. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector (1).
  10. Remove the HO2S electrical connector (1) from the engine sight shield bracket.
  11. Remove the HO2S (2) from the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor 1 Replacement.
  12. Remove the right side spark plugs from cylinders 2, 4 and 6. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement.

  13. Remove the fuel injector sight shield bracket nuts (2).
  14. Remove the fuel injector sight shield bracket (1).

    15. Object Number: 910986 Size: SH
  15. Remove the right engine lift bracket bolt (2) and the nut (3).
  16. Remove the right engine lift bracket (1).

    17. Object Number: 911016 Size: SH
  17. Remove the right exhaust manifold heat shield bolts (2).
  18. Remove the right exhaust manifold heat shield (1).
  19. Raise the vehicle.

    20. Object Number: 911025 Size: SH
  20. Remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve inlet adapter pipe bolt (1) from the right exhaust manifold.
  21. Lower the vehicle.

  22. Remove the right exhaust manifold studs (4) and the nuts (3).
  23. Remove the right exhaust manifold (2).
  24. Remove the right exhaust manifold gasket (1).

    25. Object Number: 305693 Size: SH
  25. Remove the exhaust manifold studs if damaged.
  26. Clean and Inspect the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Cleaning and Inspection.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 305693 Size: SH
  1. Install the exhaust manifold studs if removed.

    2. Object Number: 910980 Size: SH
  2. Install the right exhaust manifold gasket (1).
  3. Install the right exhaust manifold (2).

    4. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  4. Install the right exhaust manifold studs (4) and the nuts (3).

    5. Tighten
    Tighten the studs and the nuts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  5. Raise the vehicle.

    6. Object Number: 911025 Size: SH
  6. Install the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve inlet adapter pipe bolt (1) to the right exhaust manifold.

    7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 29 N·m (21 lb ft).

  7. Lower the vehicle.

  8. Install the right exhaust manifold heat shield (1).
  9. Install the right exhaust manifold heat shield bolts (2).

    10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  10. Install the right engine lift bracket (1).
  11. Install the right engine lift bracket bolt (2) and the nut (3).

    12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt and the nut to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).


    Object Number: 911011 Size: SH
  12. Install the fuel injector sight shield bracket (1).
  13. Install the fuel injector sight shield bracket nuts (2).

    14. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  14. Install the right side spark plugs to cylinders 2, 4 and 6. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement.

  15. Install the HO2S (2) to the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor 1 Replacement
  16. Install the HO2S electrical connector (1) to the engine sight shield bracket.
  17. Connect the HO2S electrical connector (1).
  18. Return the engine to the original position.
  19. Raise the vehicle.

    20. Object Number: 911163 Size: SH
  20. Install the catalytic converter pipe (3) to the right exhaust manifold.
  21. Install the catalytic converter pipe stud nuts (2) to the right exhaust manifold.

    22. Tighten
    Tighten the stud nuts to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

  22. Lower the vehicle.

  23. Install the exhaust crossover pipe studs (3) to the right exhaust manifold.

    24. Tighten
    Tighten the studs to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  24. Install the exhaust crossover heat shield (2).
  25. Install the exhaust crossover heat shield nuts (1).

    26. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  26. Install the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement - Right Side and Engine Mount Strut Replacement - Left Side.
  27. Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement.

Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side LS4

Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 1554543 Size: SH
  1. Remove the engine sight shield. Refer to Upper Intake Manifold Sight Shield Replacement.
  2. Remove the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement.
  3. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe nuts from the right exhaust manifold.
  4. Disconnect the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement.
  5. Support the catalytic convertor and exhaust system with the mechanics wire.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Remove the ignition coil. Refer to Ignition Coil Replacement.
  8. Remove the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S). Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor Replacement - Bank 1 Sensor 1.

  9. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts (604).
  10. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield (603).

    11. Object Number: 1411888 Size: SH
  11. Remove the exhaust manifold bolts.
  12. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  13. Remove and discard the exhaust manifold gasket.

Installation Procedure

Note: 

   • Tighten the exhaust manifold bolts as specified in the service procedure. Improperly installed and/or leaking exhaust manifold gaskets my affect vehicle emissions and/or On Board Diagnostic (OBD) II system performance.
   • The cylinder head exhaust manifold bolt hole threads must be clean and free of debris or threadlocking material.
   • DO NOT apply threadlock to the first three thread of the bolts.


    Object Number: 1411888 Size: SH
  1. Apply a 5 mm (0.2 in) wide band of threadlock GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) or equivalent to the threads of the exhaust manifold bolts.

    2. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  2. Install a NEW exhaust manifold gasket, the exhaust manifold and bolts.

    3. Tighten

        • Tighten the bolts a first pass to 15 N·m (11 lb ft). Tighten the bolts beginning with the center 2 bolts. Alternate from side to side, and work toward the outside.
        • Tighten the bolts a final pass to 20 N·m (15 lb ft). Tighten the bolts beginning with the center 2 bolts. Alternate from side to side, and work toward the outside.
  3. Using a flat punch, bend over the exposed edge of the exhaust manifold gasket at the rear of the right cylinder head.

  4. Install the exhaust manifold heat shield (603).
  5. Install the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts (604).

    6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  6. Install the O2 sensor. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement.
  7. Raise the vehicle.
  8. Remove the mechanics wire from the exhaust system and connect the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement.

    9. Object Number: 1554543 Size: SH
  9. Install the exhaust crossover pipe nuts to the right exhaust manifold.

    10. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  10. Install the ignition coil. Refer to Ignition Coil Replacement.
  11. Install the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement.
  12. Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Upper Intake Manifold Sight Shield Replacement.
