Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 28733-B Front Hub Spindle Remover

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel.
  3. • For vehicles with steel wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Pontiac and Export vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  4. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector (2).

  5. Object Number: 477813  Size: SH
  6. Remove the wheel speed sensor electrical connector from the bracket.
  7. Remove the brake caliper bracket with the brake caliper. Refer to Front Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  8. Remove the brake rotor. Refer to Front Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  9. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.

  10. Object Number: 40253  Size: SH
  11. Use three wheel nuts in order to attach the J 28733-B to the wheel bearing/hub.
  12. Use the J 28733-B in order to push the wheel drive shaft out of the wheel bearing/hub.

  13. Object Number: 357695  Size: SH
  14. Remove and DISCARD the wheel bearing/hub bolts.
  15. Important: Ensure that the wheel drive shaft outer seal (boot) is not damaged.

  16. Remove the wheel bearing/hub.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the wheel bearing/hub.
  2. Caution: These fasteners MUST be replaced with new fasteners anytime they become loose or are removed. Failure to replace these fasteners after they become loose or are removed may cause loss of vehicle control and personal injury.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install NEW wheel bearing/hub bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the NEW wheel bearing/hub bolts to 130 N·m (96 lb ft).

  5. Install the wheel drive shaft nut. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  6. Install the brake rotor. Refer to Front Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  7. Install the brake caliper bracket with the brake caliper. Refer to Front Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement in Disc Brakes.

  8. Object Number: 477813  Size: SH

    Important: Ensure that the connector clip engages the bracket properly.

  9. Install the wheel speed sensor electrical connector to the bracket.

  10. Object Number: 188809  Size: SH
  11. Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector (2).
  12. Install the tire and wheel.
  13. • For vehicles with steel wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
    • For Pontiac vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
