Removal Procedure

    Warning: Refer to Battery Disconnect Warning in the Preface section.

  1. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraints (SIR). Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling.
  2. Position the steering wheel straight ahead.

    Warning: The sensing and the diagnosis module (SDM) can maintain sufficient voltage to deploy the airbags and pretensioners for up to 1 minute after the ignition has been turned OFF and the fuse has been removed. If the airbags and pretensioners are not disconnected, do not begin service until one minute has been passed after disconnecting power to the SDM. Failure to do so may cause personal injury.

  4. Insert a small flat-bladed screwdriver in the horizontal position into the hole on the side of the steering wheel.

  6. Push the pin of the air bag module bracket to release the lock securing the air bag module to the steering wheel.
  7. Remove the connector from the driver air bag module.
  8. Caution: When you are carrying an undeployed inflator module:

       • Do not carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the inflator module
       • Make sure the bag opening points away from you
    When you are storing an undeployed inflator module, make sure the bag opening points away from the surface on which the inflator module rests. When you are storing a steering column, do not rest the column with the bag opening facing down and the column vertical. Provide free space for the air bag to expand in case of an accidental deployment. Otherwise, personal injury may result.

  9. Remove the driver air bag module.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the connector to the driver air bag module.
  2. Align the retaining pins on the driver air bag module with the steering wheel.
  3. Push the driver air bag module to secure.
  4. Enable the SIR. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling.
