SUBJECT: 98023 - SHIFT CABLE RETAINING TABS BREAKING AND SWIVEL TUBE BECOMES DETACHED FROM END FITTING

MODELS: 1998 CHEVROLET VENTURE, OLDSMOBILE SILHOUETTE, PONTIAC TRANS SPORT EQUIPPED WITH 3.4L-V6 ENGINE AND AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

THE HIGHWAY SAFETY ACT, AS AMENDED, PROVIDES THAT EACH VEHICLE WHICH IS SUBJECT TO A RECALL CAMPAIGN OF THIS TYPE MUST BE ADEQUATELY REPAIRED WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME AFTER THE CUSTOMER HAS TENDERED IT FOR REPAIR. A FAILURE TO REPAIR WITHIN SIXTY (60) DAYS AFTER TENDER OF A VEHICLE IS PRIMA FACIE EVIDENCE OF FAILURE TO REPAIR WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME.

IF THE CONDITION IS NOT ADEQUATELY REPAIRED WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME, THE CUSTOMER MAY BE ENTITLED TO AN IDENTICAL OR REASONABLY EQUIVALENT VEHICLE AT NO CHARGE OR TO A REFUND OF THE PURCHASE PRICE LESS A REASONABLE ALLOWANCE FOR DEPRECIATION.

TO AVOID HAVING TO PROVIDE THESE BURDENSOME REMEDIES, EVERY EFFORT MUST BE MADE TO PROMPTLY SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH EACH CUSTOMER AND TO REPAIR THEIR VEHICLE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. AS YOU WILL SEE IN READING THE ATTACHED COPY OF THE DIVISIONAL LETTER THAT IS BEING SENT TO CUSTOMERS, THE CUSTOMERS ARE BEING INSTRUCTED TO CONTACT THE APPROPRIATE CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER IF THEIR DEALER DOES NOT REMEDY THE CONDITION WITHIN FIVE (5) DAYS OF THE MUTUALLY AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE. IF THE CONDITION IS NOT REMEDIED WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME, THEY ARE INSTRUCTED ON HOW TO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION.

DEFECT INVOLVED

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DECIDED THAT CERTAIN 1998 U-VANS EQUIPPED WITH 3.4L-V6 (LA1) ENGINES AND AUTOMATIC (M13) TRANSMISSIONS FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD 102. THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE (1) A BROKEN SHIFT CABLE FITTING OR (2) LOOSE SHIFT LINKAGE SWIVEL TUBES. WITH EITHER CONDITION, MOVING THE SHIFT LEVER TO PARK MAY NOT SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION TO PARK. THE VEHICLE COULD ROLL AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING. TO HELP AVOID THIS, WHEN YOU SHIFT TO PARK, ALWAYS APPLY THE PARK BRAKE BEFORE YOU RELEASE THE SERVICE BRAKE.

INVOLVED ARE ALL 1998 U-VANS MODEL VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH OPTION CODES LA1 (3.4L V-6 ENGINES) AND M13 (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) AND BUILT WITHIN THE FOLLOWING VIN BREAKPOINTS:

NOTICE: DEALERS SHOULD CONFIRM VEHICLE ELIGIBILITY THROUGH VISS (VEHICLE INFORMATION SERVICE SYSTEM) PRIOR TO BEGINNING CAMPAIGN REPAIRS. NOT ALL VEHICLES WITHIN THE ABOVE BREAKPOINTS MAY BE INVOLVED.

THIS BULLETIN IS NOTICE TO YOU THAT THE NEW MOTOR VEHICLES INCLUDED IN THIS CAMPAIGN MAY NOT COMPLY WITH THE STANDARD IDENTIFIED ABOVE. UNDER 41 U.S.C. SECTION 30112 OF THE HIGHWAY SAFETY ACT AS AMENDED, IT IS ILLEGAL FOR A DEALER TO SELL A NEW MOTOR VEHICLE WHICH THE DEALER KNOWS DOES NOT COMPLY WITH AN APPLICABLE FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD. SERVICE PROCEDURE

THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE PROCEDURE INVOLVES INSPECTION OF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE, THEN IF NECESSARY, REPLACEMENT OF THE SHIFT CABLE.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE. ALL VEHICLES.

1. SET THE PARKING BRAKE.

2. BLOCK THE WHEELS

3. REMOVE PUSH-IN RETAINERS FROM DRIVER SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR TO INSTRUMENT PANEL.

4. REMOVE PRESS-ON RETAINERS FROM DRIVER SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR TO DASH MAT.

5. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL COURTESY LAMP BY UNSNAPPING FROM INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR.

6. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR FROM INSTRUMENT PANEL.

7. REMOVE BOLTS/SCREWS FROM BOTTOM OF KNEE BOLSTER.

8. REMOVE KNEE BOLSTER BY PULLING TO RELEASE UPPER CLIPS.

9. SHIFT THE STEERING COLUMN TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER INTO THE LOW GEAR (L1) POSITION.

NOTE: THE VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE STARTED OR RUNNING, BUT THE IGNITION KEY MUST BE IN THE "ACCESSORY" OR IN THE "ON" POSITION IN ORDER TO MOVE THE STEERING COLUMN TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER.

10. INSPECT SWIVEL TUBE RETENTION BY PULLING THE BLACK PLASTIC TUBE UPWARDS TOWARDS THE STEERING WHEEL.

NOTE: EXCESSIVE FORCE IS NOT REQUIRED TO VERIFY PROPER RETENTION OF THE TUBE TO THE CABLE CONDUIT FITTING. IF THE SWIVEL TUBE IS NOT PROPERLY SEATED IT CAN BE DISLODGED WITH A RELATIVELY LIGHT AXIAL FORCE (LESS THAN 80 N (20 LBS)). THIS CAN BE ACCOMPLISH-ED BY USING TWO OR THREE FINGERS TO PULL UPWARDS ON THE TUBE TO VERIFY RETENTION.

11. VISUALLY INSPECT FOR BROKEN, CRACKED, OR MISSING RETAINING TABS ON THE SHIFT CABLE CONDUIT FITTING AT THE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET.

12. INSPECT FOR PRESENCE OF THE CABLE RETAINER THAT HOLDS THE PLASTIC TABS OF THE CABLE FITTING AGAINST THE BRACKET. THE CABLE RETAINER IS SHAPED LIKE A LARGE STAPLE.

13. IF UPON INSPECTION, THE SWIVEL TUBE CAN BE DISLODGED OR BECOMES DISCONNECTED, OR THE RETAINING TABS ARE CRACKED OR MISSING, OR THE CABLE RETAINER IS MISSING, THE SHIFT CABLE MUST BE REPLACED. FOLLOW THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE REMOVAL, INSTALLATION, AND ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE STARTING WITH STEP 25. OTHERWISE, CONTINUE WITH STEP 14 TO RE-INSTALL THE KNEE BOLSTER AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR.

NOTICE: REFER TO FASTENER NOTICE IN CAUTIONS AND NOTICES.

14. SHIFT THE STEERING COLUMN TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER INTO THE "PARK" POSITION.

15. TURN IGNITION KEY TO THE OFF POSITION.

16. INSTALL KNEE BOLSTER TO INSTRUMENT PANEL BY LOCATING CLIPS TO SLOTS INSTRUMENT PANEL AND PUSHING TO SECURE.

17. INSTALL BOLTS/SCREWS TO BOTTOM OF KNEE BOLSTER. TIGHTEN BOLTS/SCREWS TO 2.5 NM. (22 LB. IN.)

18. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL COURTESY LAMP BY SNAPPING INTO INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR.

19. POSITION INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR TO INSTRUMENT PANEL.

20. INSTALL PRESS-ON RETAINERS TO INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR TO DASH MAT.

21. INSTALL PUSH-IN RETAINERS TO INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR TO INSTRUMENT PANEL.

22. UNBLOCK WHEELS.

23. RELEASE THE PARKING BRAKE WHILE APPLYING THE SERVICE BRAKE.

24. INSTALL THE GM CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL.

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE REMOVAL, INSTALLATION, AND ADJUSTMENT REMOVAL

25. REMOVE THE THROTTLE BODY AIR INLET DUCT.

26. REMOVE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE FROM THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR MANUAL LEVER.

27. REMOVE RETAINER FROM THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE.

28. REMOVE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE FROM THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE BRACKET.

29. REMOVE THE DRIVER SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR. (IF NOT ALREADY REMOVED DURING INSPECTION PROCEDURE.) SEE PROCEDURE STEPS 3 - 8 ABOVE.

30. REMOVE THE KNEE BOLSTER. (IF NOT ALREADY REMOVED DURING INSPECTION PROCEDURE.) SEE PROCEDURE STEPS 3 - 8 ABOVE.

31. REMOVE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE FROM THE COLUMN CONTROL LEVER BALL STUD.

32. REMOVE CABLE RETAINER FROM AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE.

33. REMOVE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE FROM THE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET.

34. REMOVE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE THROUGH THE HOLE IN THE COWL.

INSTALLATION

35. PROPERLY ROUTE THE NEW AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE THROUGH THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.

36. PROPERLY ROUTE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE THROUGH THE COWL.

37. INSTALL THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE TO THE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET.

38. INSTALL CABLE RETAINER TO THE CABLE FITTING AGAINST THE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET.

39. INSTALL THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE TO THE COLUMN CONTROL LEVER BALL STUD.

40. INSTALL THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE TO THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE BRACKET.

41. INSTALL THE CABLE RETAINER TO THE CABLE ADJUSTER FITTING AGAINST THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE BRACKET.

42. INSTALL THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE TO THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR LEVER BALL STUD.

CABLE ADJUSTMENT

NOTICE: ADJUST THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE WHILE THE TRANSAXLE AND THE GEAR SELECTOR ARE IN THE NEUTRAL POSITION ONLY. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY CAUSE MIS-ADJUSTMENT.

43. USE APPROPRIATE TOOL TO PRY ON THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE TERMINAL AT THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR LEVER TO REMOVE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE TERMINAL FROM THE TRANSAXLE MANUAL SHAFT LEVER PIN.

NOTICE: DO NOT PRY AND DO NOT PULL UP ON ANY OTHER PART OF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE OR DAMAGE MAY OCCUR.

44. FULLY LIFT UP THE ADJUSTER LOCK BUTTON. ENSURE THE ADJUSTER IS FREE TO MOVE.

ADJUSTER IS NEXT TO THE CABLE RETAINER LOCATED AT THE TRANSAXLE SIDE OF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE.

45. ROTATE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR MANUAL LEVER (LOCATED AT THE TRANSAXLE) FULLY COUNTERCLOCKWISE TO THE "PARK" GEAR POSITION, THEN ROTATE THE LEVER CLOCKWISE TWO (2) CLICKS INTO THE "NEUTRAL" GEAR TO PLACE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR MANUAL LEVER IN THE "NEUTRAL" GEAR POSITION.

46. PERFORM THE FOLLOWING STEPS TO PLACE THE STEERING COLUMN SHIFTER LEVER INTO THE "NEUTRAL" POSITION:

46.1 ROTATE THE SHIFT LEVER TO THE "LOW 1" (L1) POSITION, FULLY DOWN.

46.2 PUSH FORWARD ON THE LEVER WHILE SLOWLY PUSHING UP. THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER WILL MOVE UP WHILE CLICKING OVER THE GEAR OVER TRAVEL STOPS.

46.3 RELEASE THE GEAR SHIFT ONCE THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER STOPS SOLIDLY. THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER IS NOW IN THE "NEUTRAL" POSITION.

47. GRASP THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE TERMINAL IN THE UNDERHOOD AREA.

48. PULL THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE TERMINAL TOWARDS THE BALL STUD ON THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR MANUAL LEVER. THE TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE ADJUSTER SPRING SHOULD COMPRESS AS THE TERMINAL IS MOVED TOWARD THE PIN.

49. CAREFULLY PUSH DOWN ON THE TERMINAL UNTIL THE TERMINAL SNAPS TO ATTACH THE TERMINAL TO THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR MANUAL LEVER BALL STUD.

DO NOT MOVE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR MANUAL LEVER OUT OF POSITION WHILE PERFORMING THIS PROCEDURE.

DO NOT PULL THE TERMINAL BEYOND THE PIN THEN PUSH BACK OR THE STEERING COLUMN SHIFTER MAY MOVE OUT OF THE "NEUTRAL" POSITION.

50. PRESS THE ADJUSTER LOCK BUTTON DOWN FLUSH WITH THE ADJUSTER BODY.

51. SHIFT TO "PARK".

52. UNBLOCK WHEELS.

53. RELEASE THE PARKING BRAKE WHILE APPLYING THE SERVICE BRAKE.

54. START THE ENGINE.

55. ENSURE ALL THE INDICATED GEAR POSITIONS MATCH THE VEHICLE RESPONSE.

56. SHIFT TRANSAXLE TO "PARK".

57. TURN THE IGNITION KEY TO THE OFF POSITION.

58. INSTALL THE THROTTLE BODY AIR INLET DUCT.

NOTICE: REFER TO FASTENER NOTICE IN CAUTIONS AND NOTICES.

59. INSTALL KNEE BOLSTER TO INSTRUMENT PANEL BY LOCATING CLIPS TO SLOTS INSTRUMENT PANEL AND PUSHING TO SECURE.

60. INSTALL BOLTS/SCREWS TO BOTTOM OF KNEE BOLSTER. TIGHTEN BOLTS/SCREWS TO 2.5 NM. (22 LB. IN.)

61. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL COURTESY LAMP BY SNAPPING INTO INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR.

62. POSITION INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR TO INSTRUMENT PANEL.

63. INSTALL PRESS-ON RETAINERS TO INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR TO DASH MAT.

64. INSTALL PUSH-IN RETAINERS TO INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR TO INSTRUMENT PANEL.

65. INSTALL THE GM CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

EACH VEHICLE CORRECTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS OUTLINED IN THIS PRODUCT CAMPAIGN BULLETIN WILL REQUIRE A "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL". EACH LABEL PROVIDES A SPACE TO INCLUDE THE CAMPAIGN NUMBER AND THE FIVE (5) DIGIT DEALER CODE OF THE DEALER PERFORMING THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE. THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INSERTED WITH A TYPEWRITER OR A BALL POINT PEN.

EACH "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL" IS TO BE LOCATED ON THE RADIATOR CORE SUPPORT IN AN AREA WHICH WILL BE VISIBLE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BROUGHT IN BY THE CUSTOMER FOR PERIODIC SERVICING. DEFECT INVOLVED

GENERAL MOTORS OF CANADA LIMITED HAS DECIDED THAT CERTAIN 1998 U-VANS EQUIPPED WITH 3.4L V-6 (LA1) ENGINES AND AUTOMATIC (M13) TRANSMISSIONS FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE CANADA MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD (CMVSS) 102 "TRANSMISSION SHIFT CONTROL SEQUENCE." THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE PROCEDURE INVOLVES INSPECTION OF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE, THEN IF NECESSARY, REPLACEMENT OF THE SHIFT CABLE.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE - ALL VEHICLES

1. SET THE PARKING BRAKE.

2. BLOCK THE WHEELS

3. REMOVE PUSH-IN RETAINERS FROM DRIVER SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR TO INSTRUMENT PANEL.

4. REMOVE PRESS-ON RETAINERS FROM DRIVER SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR TO DASH MAT.

5. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL COURTESY LAMP BY UNSNAPPING FROM INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR.

6. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR FROM INSTRUMENT PANEL.

7. REMOVE BOLTS/SCREWS FROM BOTTOM OF KNEE BOLSTER.

8. REMOVE KNEE BOLSTER BY PULLING TO RELEASE UPPER CLIPS.

9. SHIFT THE STEERING COLUMN TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER INTO THE LOW GEAR (L1) POSITION.

NOTE: THE VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE STARTED OR RUNNING, BUT THE IGNITION KEY MUST BE IN THE "ACCESSORY" OR IN THE "ON" POSITION IN ORDER TO MOVE THE STEERING COLUMN TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER.

10. INSPECT SWIVEL TUBE RETENTION BY PULLING THE BLACK PLASTIC TUBE UPWARDS TOWARDS THE STEERING WHEEL.

NOTE: EXCESSIVE FORCE IS NOT REQUIRED TO VERIFY PROPER RETENTION OF THE TUBE TO THE CABLE CONDUIT FITTING. IF THE SWIVEL TUBE IS NOT PROPERLY SEATED IT CAN BE DISLODGED WITH A RELATIVELY LIGHT AXIAL FORCE [cent ]LESS THAN 80 N (20 LBS.)|. THIS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY USING TWO OR THREE FINGERS TO PULL UPWARDS ON THE TUBE TO VERIFY RETENTION.

11. VISUALLY INSPECT FOR BROKEN, CRACKED, OR MISSING RETAINING TABS ON THE SHIFT CABLE CONDUIT FITTING AT THE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET.

12. INSPECT FOR PRESENCE OF THE CABLE RETAINER THAT HOLDS THE PLASTIC TABS OF THE CABLE FITTING AGAINST THE BRACKET. THE CABLE RETAINER IS SHAPED LIKE A LARGE STAPLE.

13. IF UPON INSPECTION, THE SWIVEL TUBE CAN BE DISLODGED OR BECOMES DISCONNECTED, OR THE RETAINING TABS ARE CRACKED OR MISSING, OR THE CABLE RETAINER IS MISSING, THE SHIFT CABLE MUST BE REPLACED. FOLLOW THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE REMOVAL, INSTALLATION, AND ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE STARTING WITH STEP 25. OTHERWISE, CONTINUE WITH STEP 14 TO REINSTALL THE KNEE BOLSTER AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR.

NOTICE: REFER TO FASTENER NOTICE IN CAUTIONS AND NOTICES.

14. SHIFT THE STEERING COLUMN TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER INTO THE "PARK" POSITION.

15. TURN IGNITION KEY TO THE "OFF" POSITION.

16. INSTALL KNEE BOLSTER TO INSTRUMENT PANEL BY LOCATING CLIPS TO SLOTS INSTRUMENT PANEL AND PUSHING TO SECURE.

17. INSTALL BOLTS/SCREWS TO BOTTOM OF KNEE BOLSTER. TIGHTEN BOLTS/SCREWS TO 2.5 N M (22 LB. IN.)

18. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL COURTESY LAMP BY SNAPPING INTO INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR.

19. POSITION INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR TO INSTRUMENT PANEL.

20. INSTALL PRESS-ON RETAINERS TO INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR TO DASH MAT.

21. INSTALL PUSH-IN RETAINERS TO INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR TO INSTRUMENT PANEL.

22. UNBLOCK WHEELS.

23. RELEASE THE PARKING BRAKE WHILE APPLYING THE SERVICE BRAKE.

24. INSTALL CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL.

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE REMOVAL, INSTALLATION, AND ADJUSTMENT

REMOVAL

25. REMOVE THE THROTTLE BODY AIR INLET DUCT.

26. REMOVE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE FROM THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR MANUAL LEVER.

27. REMOVE RETAINER FROM THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE.

28. REMOVE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE FROM THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE BRACKET.

29. REMOVE THE DRIVER SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR, IF NOT ALREADY REMOVED DURING INSPECTION PROCEDURE (SEE PROCEDURE STEPS 3 - 8 ON PAGES 3 AND 4).

30. REMOVE THE KNEE BOLSTER, IF NOT ALREADY REMOVED DURING INSPECTION PROCEDURE (SEE PROCEDURE STEPS 3 - 8 ON PAGES 3 AND 4).

31. REMOVE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE FROM THE COLUMN CONTROL LEVER BALL STUD.

32. REMOVE CABLE RETAINER FROM AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE.

33. REMOVE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE FROM THE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET.

34. REMOVE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE THROUGH THE HOLE IN THE COWL.

INSTALLATION

35. PROPERLY ROUTE THE NEW AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE THROUGH THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.

36. PROPERLY ROUTE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE THROUGH THE COWL.

37. INSTALL THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE TO THE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET.

38. INSTALL CABLE RETAINER TO THE CABLE FITTING AGAINST THE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET.

39. INSTALL THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE TO THE COLUMN CONTROL LEVER BALL STUD.

40. INSTALL THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE TO THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE BRACKET.

41. INSTALL THE CABLE RETAINER TO THE CABLE ADJUSTER FITTING AGAINST THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE BRACKET.

42. INSTALL THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE TO THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR LEVER BALL STUD.

CABLE ADJUSTMENT

NOTICE: ADJUST THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE WHILE THE TRANSAXLE AND THE GEAR SELECTOR ARE IN THE "NEUTRAL" POSITION ONLY. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY CAUSE MIS- ADJUSTMENT.

43. USE APPROPRIATE TOOL TO PRY ON THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE TERMINAL AT THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR LEVER TO REMOVE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE TERMINAL FROM THE TRANSAXLE MANUAL SHAFT LEVER PIN.

NOTICE: DO NOT PRY AND DO NOT PULL UP ON ANY OTHER PART OF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE OR DAMAGE MAY OCCUR.

44. FULLY LIFT UP THE ADJUSTER LOCK BUTTON. ENSURE THE ADJUSTER IS FREE TO MOVE.

ADJUSTER IS NEXT TO THE CABLE RETAINER LOCATED AT THE TRANSAXLE SIDE OF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE.

45. ROTATE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR MANUAL LEVER (LOCATED AT THE TRANSAXLE) FULLY COUNTERCLOCKWISE TO THE "PARK" GEAR POSITION, THEN ROTATE THE LEVER CLOCKWISE TWO (2) CLICKS INTO THE "NEUTRAL" GEAR TO PLACE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR MANUAL LEVER IN THE "NEUTRAL" GEAR POSITION.

46. PERFORM THE FOLLOWING STEPS TO PLACE THE STEERING COLUMN SHIFTER LEVER INTO THE "NEUTRAL" POSITION:

(A) ROTATE THE SHIFT LEVER TO THE "LOW 1" (L1) POSITION, FULLY DOWN.

(B) PUSH FORWARD ON THE LEVER WHILE SLOWLY PUSHING UP. THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER WILL MOVE UP WHILE CLICKING OVER THE GEAR OVER TRAVEL STOPS.

(C) RELEASE THE GEAR SHIFT ONCE THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER STOPS SOLIDLY. THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER IS NOW IN THE "NEUTRAL" POSITION.

47. GRASP THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE TERMINAL IN THE UNDERHOOD AREA.

48. PULL THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE TERMINAL TOWARDS THE BALL STUD ON THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR MANUAL LEVER. THE TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR CABLE ADJUSTER SPRING SHOULD COMPRESS AS THE TERMINAL IS MOVED TOWARD THE PIN.

49. CAREFULLY PUSH DOWN ON THE TERMINAL UNTIL THE TERMINAL SNAPS TO ATTACH THE TERMINAL TO THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR MANUAL LEVER BALL STUD.

DO NOT MOVE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE RANGE SELECTOR MANUAL LEVER OUT OF POSITION WHILE PERFORMING THIS PROCEDURE.

DO NOT PULL THE TERMINAL BEYOND THE PIN THEN PUSH BACK OR THE STEERING COLUMN SHIFTER MAY MOVE OUT OF THE "NEUTRAL" POSITION.

50. PRESS THE ADJUSTER LOCK BUTTON DOWN FLUSH WITH THE ADJUSTER BODY.

51. SHIFT TO "PARK".

52. UNBLOCK WHEELS.

53. RELEASE THE PARKING BRAKE WHILE APPLYING THE SERVICE BRAKE.

54. START THE ENGINE.

55. ENSURE ALL THE INDICATED GEAR POSITIONS MATCH THE VEHICLE RESPONSE.

56. SHIFT TRANSAXLE TO "PARK".

57. TURN THE IGNITION KEY TO THE "OFF" POSITION.

58. INSTALL THE THROTTLE BODY AIR INLET DUCT.

NOTICE: REFER TO FASTENER NOTICE IN CAUTIONS AND NOTICES.

59. INSTALL KNEE BOLSTER TO INSTRUMENT PANEL BY LOCATING CLIPS TO SLOTS INSTRUMENT PANEL AND PUSHING TO SECURE.

60. INSTALL BOLTS/SCREWS TO BOTTOM OF KNEE BOLSTER. TIGHTEN BOLTS/SCREWS TO 2.5 N M (22 LB. IN.)

61. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL COURTESY LAMP BY SNAPPING INTO INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR.

62. POSITION INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR TO INSTRUMENT PANEL.

63. INSTALL PRESS-ON RETAINERS TO INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR TO DASH MAT.

64. INSTALL PUSH-IN RETAINERS TO INSTRUMENT PANEL INSULATOR TO INSTRUMENT PANEL.

65. INSTALL CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

EACH LABEL PROVIDES A SPACE TO INCLUDE THE CAMPAIGN NUMBER AND THE FIVE (5) DIGIT DEALER CODE OF THE DEALER PERFORMING THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE. THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INSERTED WITH A TYPEWRITER OR A BALL POINT PEN.
