Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the instrument panel left side insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
  2. Pull the intermediate steering shaft seal down off of the steering column in order to access the intermediate steering shaft upper bolt.

  3. Object Number: 294371  Size: SH
  4. Remove the intermediate steering shaft upper bolt.
  5. Push the intermediate steering shaft down in order to remove the intermediate steering shaft from the steering column. If you are unable to remove the intermediate shaft, perform the following steps:
  6. 4.1. Insert the tip of a large flat-bladed tool into the intermediate steering shaft end slot.
    4.2. Twist the large flat-bladed tool in order to loosen the intermediate steering shaft.
  7. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  8. Remove the left front tire and wheel. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
  9. Apply silicone (non petroleum based) lubricant to the intermediate shaft lower seal.
  10. Push the intermediate shaft lower seal up into the intermediate shaft upper seal in order to access to the intermediate shaft lower bolt.
  11. Remove the intermediate shaft lower bolt.
  12. Push the intermediate steering shaft up in order to remove the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear. If you are unable to remove the intermediate shaft, perform the following steps:
  13. 10.1. Insert the tip of a large flat-bladed tool into the intermediate steering shaft end slot.
    10.2. Twist the large flat-bladed tool in order to loosen the intermediate steering shaft.
  14. Remove the intermediate steering shaft.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the intermediate steering shaft through the intermediate steering shaft seal.
  2. Install the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the intermediate steering shaft lower bolt.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the intermediate steering shaft lower bolt to 48 N·m (35 lb ft).

  6. Install the intermediate steering shaft seal to the steering gear.
  7. Install the left front tire and wheel. Refer to Wheel Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Install the intermediate steering shaft to the steering column.
  10. Install the intermediate steering shaft upper bolt.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the intermediate steering shaft upper bolt to 48 N·m (35 lb ft).

  12. Install the intermediate steering shaft seal to the steering column.
  13. Install the instrument panel left side insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and Console.
