Owners of some vehicles equipped with HYDRA-MATIC 3T40 and 4T60 transaxles may comment on a grinding and/or growl noise that is noticeable when shifting the transaxle into the "Park" range on an incline. As stated in the vehicles' Owners Manual, the customer is asked to perform the following steps in sequence whenever "Parking" a vehicle equipped with a HYDRA-MATIC transmission.

1. Hold the regular brake pedal down with your right foot and apply the parking brake all the way. Follow the Parking Brake instructions in this manual for your car.

2. To move the shift lever into "P" (PARK)--

3. Pull the lever toward you and pull it up as far as it will go. If the vehicle is console equipped, hold in the button on the lever and push the lever all the way toward the front of the vehicle from you into park.

4. If you don't have to leave the engine running (briefly):

- Move the ignition key to lock or

- Depress the key release lever and move the ignition key to lock.

- Remove the key and take it with you.

5. Before you leave the driver's seat, check that your car is in park by trying to pull the shift lever out of "P" (PARK) by pulling the shift lever down without pulling it toward you (Console equipped: pull lever toward you without pressing button on the lever). If you can do this, it means that the shift lever wasn't fully locked into "P" (PARK). Or check that your car is in park by pocketing the key. If you can remove the key, the car is in "P" (PARK).
