Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  2. Remove the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  3. Reposition the underhood accessory wiring junction block for access.
  4. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  5. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .

  7. Remove the water pump pulley retaining bolts.
  8. Remove the water pump pulley.
  9. Remove the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement in Power Steering System.
  10. Remove the drive belt idler pulley.
  11. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  12. Remove the engine front cover coolant drain plug and drain the coolant from the engine.

  14. Remove the water pump retaining bolts.
  15. Remove the water pump drive belt shield.

  16. Object Number: 241685  Size: SH

    Important: Do not damage the sealing surface.

  17. Remove the water pump and housing (3) from the front cover (1).
  18. Remove the water pump gasket (2). Use a plastic scraper to remove any excess gasket material.
  19. The water pump and housing are one unit and must be serviced as an assembly.
  20. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .

  22. Remove the 10 front cover perimeter bolts.
  23. Remove the front cover and the gasket. Make sure you do not damage the sealing surface. Some of the gasket material may remain on the engine block.
  24. Remove the remaining gasket material from the front cover and engine block using a plastic scraper.
  25. Clean and inspect the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 233363  Size: SH
  1. Place a short bead of RTV sealant, GM P/N 12345739 or equivalent, on the cylinder block in the locations shown (1).

  2. Object Number: 263970  Size: SH
  3. Align front cover gasket to the front cover bolt holes and insert 2 bolts to hold the gasket in position.
  4. Install the front cover and gasket on the cylinder block.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Hand start all the front cover retaining bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the front cover retaining bolts to 14 N·m (124 lb in).

  8. Install a new crankshaft front oil seal. Refer to Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Replacement .
  9. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .

  10. Object Number: 241685  Size: SH
  11. Make sure the front cover (1) and water pump (3) are clear of old gasket material.
  12. Place a new water pump gasket (2) on the water pump (3).
  13. Place the water pump in position on the front cover.

  14. Object Number: 244371  Size: SH
  15. Install the water pump retaining bolts in sequence.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump bolts to 14 N·m (124 lb in).

  17. Install the engine front cover coolant drain plug.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the engine front cover coolant drain plug to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  19. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  20. Install the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement in Power Steering System.
  21. Install the drive belt idler pulley.
  22. Tighten
    Tighten the drive belt pulleuto 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  23. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .

  24. Object Number: 244399  Size: SH
  25. Install the water pump pulley and retaining bolts.
  26. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  27. Install the underhood accessory wiring junction block.
  28. Install the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  29. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
