STG. WHEEL VIBRATION AT IDLE (INSTALL THREE LEGGED FAN)

SUBJECT: STEERING WHEEL VIBRATION WITH THE ENGINE AT IDLE (INSTALL THREE LEGGED COOLING FAN)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1992 OLDSMOBILE "H" MODELS

CONDITION:

--------- Some early built 1992 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight's may have a steering wheel vibration at idle when the engine cooling fans are running. The condition may also be described as a high frequency beating or droning sensation.

CORRECTION:

---------- Install Part #22134154 after performing the following diagnostics:

1. Warm the vehicle to normal operating temperature.

2. Connect Tech 1 or T-100 (GM-CAMS) terminal to the ALDL port.

3. Command the fans to the "off" position and note the steering wheel vibration. This will give the technician a baseline feeling for normal vibration.

4. Command the fans to the "on" position using the Tech 1 or T-100 (GM-CAMS) terminal.

5. Note the change in the steering wheel vibration. If the vibration has increased noticeably, replace the right hand side cooling fan.

6. The service fan is a three-legged design. The single leg mounts in the down position. It will be necessary to move the lower "J" clip to the centre mounting hole in the radiator core support.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
