1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

   Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

2. Remove the transmission assembly. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transaxle 4T40 - E/4T45 - E.



3. Remove the bolts attaching the flywheel to the crankshaft.



4. Remove the bolts which secure the oil pan to the crankshaft seal housing.
5. Remove the bolts which secure the seal housing to the block.
6. Remove the seal housing and gasket.

Notice: Properly support the seal housing to prevent damage to the seal during removal. Damage to the seal will result in an oil leak.

7. Support the seal housing for the seal removal using 2 wood blocks of equal thickness. With the wood blocks on a flat surface, position the seal housing and the blocks so that the transmission side of the seal housing is supported across the dowel pin and the center bolt holes on both sides of the seal opening.
8. Using a small chisel in the relief grooves on the crankshaft side of the seal housing, drive the crankshaft seal evenly out of the transmission side of the seal housing.

Tools Required

1. Replace the oil pan gasket if any of the following conditions exist:

•	Cuts or nicks

•	Deformation

•	Separation from the aluminum carrier

2. Inspect the strips of silicone in the following locations:

•	Across the top of the aluminum carrier at the oil pan

•	At the cylinder block

•	At the seal housing 3 way joint

3. Repair damaged strips using Silicone Sealant GM P/N 12345739 or equivalent. Use only enough sealant in order to restore the silicone strip to its original dimension.
4. Install the seal housing.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

5. Install the bolts which secure the oil pan to the seal housing.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).




6. Install a new rear crankshaft seat using J 36005 .
7. Install the flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
8. Install the new bolts or apply Adhesive/Sealant Compound GM P/N 12345493 or equivalent to the bolts which you are reusing.
9. Use J 38122-A and J 36660-A when installing the bolts. This will prevent crankshaft rotation.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft) + 45 degrees.

10. Install the transmission assembly. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T40 - E/4T45 - E.
11. Connect the negative battery cable.

Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

12. Test the engine oil level.
13. Start the engine and test for leaks.
