Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 38892 Ball Joint Separator.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information
  2. If the suspension contact hoist is used:
  3. • Place the jacks stands under the suspension supports.
    • Lower the vehicle slightly so that weight of the vehicle rests on the suspension supports and not on the control arms.
  4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Removal .

  5. Object Number: 171137  Size: SH
  6. Remove the nut attaching the stabilizer link to the stabilizer shaft.
  7. Remove the ball joint cotter pin and nut from the knuckle using the J 38892

  8. Object Number: 171139  Size: SH
  9. Remove the bolts attaching the control arm to the suspension support (1).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 171137  Size: SH
  1. Install the control arm into position and loosely install the bolts attaching the control arm to the suspension support (1).
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the nut attaching the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Tighten to specifications and install the cotter pin.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 55-65 N·m (41-48 lb ft).

  5. Install the nut attaching the stabilizer link to the stabilizer shaft.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  7. If a suspension contact hoist is used:
  8. • Raise the vehicle slightly.
    • Remove the jack stands from under the suspension supports.
  9. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Installation

  10. Object Number: 171139  Size: SH
  11. With the vehicle at curb height, tighten the following suspension support bolts in the sequence as follows:
  12. Tighten

        • Tighten the center bolts (3) first to 120 N·m (89 lb ft).
        • Tighten the front bolts (5) second to 120 N·m (89 lb ft).
        • Tighten the rear bolts (2) third to 120 N·m (89 lb ft).
  13. With the vehicle at curb height, tighten the control arm attaching bolts.
  14. Tighten

        • Tighten the control arm to suspension support bolts (front bushing) to 120 N·m (89 lb ft).
        • Tighten the control arm to suspension support bolts (rear vertical bushing) to 170 N·m (125 lb ft).
  15. Check the front wheel alignment. Refer to Front Camber Adjustment .
