CAMPAIGN: PASSENGER SIDE SEAT EASY-ENTRY ADJ. FAILS TO LOCK

Subject: PASSENGER'S SIDE EASY-ENTRY SEAT ADJUSTER - FAILS TO LOCK IN POSITION

Models: Certain 1992 Buick Skylark, Skylark GS and Pontiac Grand Am Coupe Models Equipped with Easy-Entry Seat

General Motors of Canada Limited has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1992 Buick Skylark, Skylark GS and Pontiac Grand Am Coupe models. These vehicles may exhibit a condition in which the passenger's side Easy-Entry seat adjuster may fail to fully lock into position after the seat back has been tilted forward and the seat slid forward and then back to its original position to allow entry or exit to or from the rear seat area.

If the seat is not fully locked in position, the entire seat assembly could slide forward during a rapid deceleration. If this were to occur while the passenger seat was occupied, the resultant forward travel of the seat could result in serious injury to the occupant.

To prevent this condition from occurring, dealers are to replace the passenger's side Easy-Entry seat adjuster mechanism on all vehicles involved in this campaign.

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

Involved are certain 1992 Buick Skylark, Skylark GS and Pontiac Grand Am Coupes built within the following VIN breakpoints:

All affected vehicles have been identified by the VIN listing provided to involved dealers with this bulletin. Any dealer not receiving a listing was not shipped any of the affected vehicles.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY:

Dealers are to perform this campaign on all involved vehicles at no charge to owners, regardless of kilometres traveled, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service, you are to ensure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

CAMPAIGN PROCEDURE:

Refer to Section 4 of the Service Policies and Procedures Manual for the detailed procedure on handling Product Campaigns. Dealers are requested to complete the campaign on all transfers as soon as possible.

OWNER NOTIFICATION:

Owners will NOT be notified of this campaign on their vehicles. A D.C.S. message has been sent to all GM dealers with instructions to hold all suspect vehicles until the campaign service procedure has been performed.

PARTS AND LABOUR CLAIM INFORMATION:

Credit for the campaign work performed will be paid upon receipt of a properly completed campaign claim card or DCS transmission in accordance with the following:

Time allowance includes 0.1 hour for dealer administrative detail associated with this campaign. Parts credit will be based on dealer net plus 30% to cover parts handling.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Move the passenger seat to the full forward position.

2. Remove one (1) screw from the rear of the outboard seat track cover and remove the cover.

3. Remove LH rear seat mounting stud cover by prying off.

4. Remove two (2) rear seat mounting nuts.

5. Move seat to full rearward position.

6. Remove LH front seat mounting stud cover by prying off.

7. Remove two (2) front seat mounting nuts.

8. Move seat to full forward position to relax assist spring.

9. Remove the seat from the vehicle and place it on a work bench or table in an inverted position.

NOTICE: Be sure that the surface of the work bench or table is clean, and/or properly covered to prevent soiling or damage to the seat covering material.

10. Remove the safety belt assembly from the old seat adjuster assembly for transfer to new adjuster assembly.

11. Disengage the Easy-Entry cable from the cable retainer.

12. Disconnect the Easy-Entry cable end from the lock bar on the RH track.

13. Place replacement adjuster assembly next to seat on bench.

14. Make sure that the new adjuster assembly is properly aligned for installation by checking the position of the alignment marks on the upper and lower channels. These marks should be aligned on both sides.

15. Examine old adjuster mechanism and note position of large assist spring. Remove large assist spring from old adjuster assembly and reinstall on new adjuster assembly as follows:

A. Hook long-shank end of spring into rear-most large hole on upper channel of RH, or outboard side. This hole is approximately 3/4" in diameter and is just forward of the bolt hole for the RH rear bolt that attaches the adjuster assembly to the seat frame.

B. Hook the short-shank end of the assist spring into the slotted hole located on the side of the LH, or inner front floor mounting support or "foot."

16. Remove the four (4) bolts that attach the old adjuster assembly to the seat frame. Remove old adjuster assembly.

17. Position new adjuster assembly to seat frame, making sure that the alignment marks on the new seat track assembly are still lined up.

18. Install the two (2) rear adjuster to seat frame attaching bolts. Tighten to 27 N.m (20 lbs. ft.).

19. Unlatch the fore/aft lock mechanism using the fore/aft adjustment handle and slide the adjuster to the full-forward position (lower channels and adjuster mounting "feet" are fully rearward). Visually inspect the locking mechanism to make sure that the adjuster is locked in the full-forward position.

20. Install the two (2) front adjuster to seat frame attaching bolts. Tighten to 27 N.m (20 lbs. ft.).

21. Connect the Easy-Entry cable end to the lock bar on the RH track.

22. Engage the Easy-Entry cable to the cable retainer.

23. Apply Loctite 242 thread locking compound, or equivalent, to the threads of the safety belt attaching bolt. Install the safety belt assembly to the new adjuster assembly. Tighten bolt to 27 N.m (20 lbs. ft.).

24. Carefully place the seat assembly back into the vehicle and over the seat mounting studs.

IMPORTANT: THE FORE/AFT ADJUSTMENT HANDLE MUST NOT BE RELEASED UNTIL THE REAR SEAT MOUNTING NUTS HAVE BEEN TIGHTENED. IF THE FORE/AFT ADJUSTMENT HANDLE IS INADVERTENTLY RELEASED BEFORE THE REAR SEAT MOUNTING NUTS ARE TIGHTENED, THE SEAT MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE AND THE ADJUSTER MECHANISM RE-POSITIONED TO THE FULL-FORWARD, LOCKED POSITION.

25. Install the rear seat mounting nuts and tighten to 29 N.m (21 lbs. ft.).

26. Unlatch the fore/aft locking mechanism using the fore/aft adjustment handle and move the seat rearward far enough to gain access to the front seat mounting studs, but = all the way back against the rear stops. Release the adjuster handle and verify that both sides of the seat adjuster locking mechanism are fully engaged either by visual inspection or by pushing forward and rearward (by hand) on each side of the seat.

27. Install the rear seat mounting nuts and tighten to 29 N.m (21 lbs. ft.).

28. Verify proper function by performing the following check procedure at several fore/aft positions:

A. Tilt seat back forward and move entire seat forward to simulate a back seat entry/exit situation.

B. Tilt seat back back to seating position and slide entire seat rearward until it stops.

Visually inspect under the seat to be sure that the locking mechanisms on both tracks are fully engaged. Also, sit in the seat and attempt to move the seat forward and/or backward. The seat should not move out of position until the fore/aft adjuster handle is unlatched.

29. Install two (2) plastic stud covers P/N 16609637 to the inboard seat mounting studs.

30. Reinstall the outboard seat track cover with one (1) screw.

31. Install Campaign Identification Label.

INSTALLATION OF CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Clean surface of radiator upper mounting panel and apply a Campaign Identification Label. Make sure the correct campaign number is inserted on the label. This will indicate that the campaign has been completed.
