INFO ON LACK OF A/C COOLING REFRIGERANT SYSTEM INOPERATIVE

SUBJECT: INFORMATION ON LACK OF AIR CONDITIONING COOLING

MODELS/YEARS: 1992 ACHIEVA WITH 3.3L (VIN N) ENGINE

A limited number of V-5 compressors were installed into 1992 Achievas, vehicle numbers NM463080 through NM464982 with a refrigerant oil that was designated for use with refrigerant R134a. If a customer brings a vehicle in with a lack of cooling concern, and the refrigerant system is inoperative, check to see if the VIN falls within the breakpoints listed above. If so, look for the following information on the A/C compressor:

1. The part number on the compressor label must be 1135003 (Refer to Figure 1). 2. The build date code on the compressor label must be 061021 (Refer to Figure 1). 3. The number '21' will be stamped on the mounting lug closest to the drain plug (Refer to Figure 2).

If ALL of the above conditions have been met, contact the N-car Production Plant Help Line at 1-800-225- 5523 for further instructions before proceeding with any repairs.

If the vehicle and compressor information does NOT meet all of the above conditions, proceed with the normal system diagnosis as outlined in SECTION 1B of the service manual.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
