  1. Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle.
  2. Carry out the battery inspection test Battery Inspection/Test.
  3. Select Park or Neutral.
  4. With a scan tool verify that no Theft Deterrent DTC's are set.

  5. Object Number: 1949865 Size: SH
  6. Connect the DMM set to volts to the battery posts (1) record reading .
  7. Observe the scan tool, turn the ignition key to the start position Crank Request should be activated on screen.
  8. If Crank Request is not present. Connect a DMM to the ignition start crank circuit of the ECM, with the key in the start position the DMM should read Battery voltage.
If voltage is not within 1 volt of battery voltage connect a DMM to the crank out at the ignition switch.
If voltage is within 1 voltage, inspect circuit for open/high resistance or short to ground open/high resistance.
  9. If Crank Request is present remove the starter motor relay.

  10. Object Number: 1949867 Size: SH
  11. Connect a DMM to the starter motor relay (1) control circuit, turn the ignition key to the crank position.
  12. If voltage is not within 1 volt of battery voltage then check circuit for open/high resistance or short to ground.

    Object Number: 1949869 Size: SH
  13. Connect the a DMM to the supply voltage of the starter motor relay (1) and a known ground.
  14. If voltage is not within 1 volt of battery voltage inspect the circuit for open/high resistance or short to ground.
    Refit starter motor relay.

    Object Number: 1949872 Size: SH
  15. Connect a DMM set to volts between the positive battery cable (1) at the starter motor and a known ground (2).
  16. If voltage varies more than 1 volt from the battery voltage check circuit for open/high resistance or short to ground.

    Object Number: 1949874 Size: SH
  17. Connect a DMM set to volts between Starter motor solenoid supply cable (1) and a known ground (2)
  18. Turn key to crank position. If voltage is more than 1 volt from the battery voltage, check circuit for open/high resistance or short to ground.
  19. If voltage is within range replace starter motor.
