Crankshaft Balancer Removal L98, LS2

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

   • 
  • J 41816 Crankshaft Balancer Remover
  •    • 
  • J 41816-2 Crankshaft End Protector
  •    • 
  • J 42386-A Flywheel Holding Tool

    1. Object Number: 1954100  Size: SH
    2. Remove the right transmission cover (1) to engine oil pan retaining bolt (2).
    3. Remove the right transmission cover (1).
    4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


      Object Number: 1950869  Size: SH
    5. Using the two starter motor bolts (2), install the J 42386-A  (1).
    6. Tighten
      Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m(37 lb ft).

      Important: DO NOT discard the crankshaft balancer bolt. The balancer bolt will be used during the first pass only of the balancer installation procedure. Install a NEW crankshaft balancer bolt at second pass, during final assembly.

    7. Remove the crankshaft balancer retaining bolt (1).

    9. Use the J 41816  (1) and J 41816-2  (2) to remove the crankshaft balancer (3).

        • J 41816-2 Crankshaft End Protector
        • J 42386-A Flywheel Holding Tool

      Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

      Important: 

         • For manual transmission applications, note the position of the crankshaft balancer before removal. The balancer does not use a key or keyway for positioning. Mark or scribe the end of the crankshaft and the balancer before component removal. The crankshaft balancer must be installed to the original position. If replacing the crankshaft balancer, note the location of any existing balance weights, if applicable. Crankshaft balance weights must be installed into the new balancer in the same location as the old balancer. A properly installed balance weight will be either flush or below flush with the face of the balancer.
         • Do not use the crankshaft balancer bolt again. Install a NEW crankshaft balancer bolt during final assembly.

    1. Install the J 42386-A and bolts.
    2. Use 1 M10 - 1.5 x 120 mm and 1 M10 - 1.5 x 45 mm bolt for proper tool operation.

      Tighten
      Tighten the J 42386-A bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

    3. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt (139).
    4. Do not discard the crankshaft balancer bolt. The balancer bolt will be used during the balancer installation procedure.

    5. Mark or scribe the crankshaft balancer and the end of the crankshaft.

    6. Object Number: 1408848  Size: SH
    7. Use the J 41816-A  (1) and the J 41816-2  (2) in order to remove the crankshaft balancer.

    9. Remove the crankshaft balancer (1).

    10. Object Number: 1759519  Size: SH
    11. Remove the crankshaft balancer washer (1) from the balancer.

    13. Note the position of the crankshaft balance weights, if applicable. Refer to Engine Balancing and Crankshaft Balancer Cleaning and Inspection.
