Starter Replacement 6.0L Engine

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
  2. Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution in the Preface section.

    Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in the Preface section.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  4. Remove the right catalytic converter from the vehicle. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement - Right Side.

  6. Remove the starter motor heat shield to starter motor retaining bolts (1).
  7. Remove the heat shield from the vehicle (2).

  8. Object Number: 1994663  Size: SH
  9. Remove the starter motor solenoid cable (1) from the starter motor.
  10. Remove battery positive cable retaining nut (2) from the starter motor solenoid.

  11. Object Number: 1954042  Size: SH
  12. Remove starter motor to engine block retaining bolts (1).
  13. Manoeuvre the starter motor (2) out and down between the transmission bell housing and body sub frame.

Installation Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution in the Preface section.

    Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 1954042  Size: SH
  3. Manoeuvre the starter motor (2) Into position between the transmission bell housing and body sub frame.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install starter motor to bell housing retaining bolts (1).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to xx  N·m (xx lb ft).

  7. Install the starter motor solenoid cable (2), to the starter motor solenoid terminal.
  8. Install battery positive cable retaining nut (1) to the starter motor battery positive terminal.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the solenoid cable nut to 10  N·m (7 lb ft).

  10. Install the heat shield to the vehicle (2).
  11. Install the heat shield to starter motor retaining bolts (1).
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to (5)  N·m (44) lb in).

  13. Install the right catalytic converter to the vehicle. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement - Right Side.
  14. Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.

  15. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
  16. Remove the safety stands.
  17. Lower the vehicle to the ground.

Starter Replacement 3.6L Engine

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution in the Preface section.

    Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Ignition OFF.
  3. Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.

  4. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.

  5. Object Number: 1949862  Size: SH
  6. Remove the starter motor solenoid electrical connector (2) from the starter motor.
  7. Remove the battery positive cable retaining nut (1) from the starter motor solenoid .

  8. Object Number: 1949864  Size: SH
  9. Remove the starter motor to bell housing retaining bolts (2).
  10. Remove the starter motor (1) from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution in the Preface section.

    Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Manoeuvre the starter motor into place, locating into the correct position on the bell housing.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1949864  Size: SH
  4. Install the starter motor to bell housing (2) retaining bolt.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  6. Install the battery positive cable to the battery solenoid.
  7. Install the starter motor solenoid cable to the starter motor retaining nut (1).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 20 N·m (14 lb ft).

  9. Install the starter motor solenoid cable (1) to the starter motor.
  10. Lower the vehicle from supports. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  11. Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.

  12. Connect negative battery terminal. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
