Engine Control Module Programming and Setup 3.6L

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.

Warning: Replacement or reprogramming of the ECM, or replacement of the clutch pedal position sensor (CPPS) or clutch pedal requires that a CPPS learn procedure be performed. Failure to perform the CPPS learn procedure may result in personal injury or damage to the vehicle or its components if the vehicle is in gear and the starter motor is accidentally engaged.

ECM Replacement and Reprogramming

If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced or reprogrammed, the following procedures must be performed:

  1. ECM Reprogramming--Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .
  2. Clutch pedal position sensor learn, if equipped--Refer to Clutch Pedal Position Sensor Learn .
  3. Idle Learn Procedure--Refer to Idle Learn
  4. Theft Deterrent--Refer to Theft Deterrent Control Module Programming and Setup . The ECM will learn the incoming fuel continue password immediately upon receipt of a password message. Once a password message is received, and a password is learned, a learn procedure must be performed to change this password again. An ECM which has been previously installed in another vehicle will have learned the other vehicle's fuel continue password, and will require a learn procedure after programming to learn the current vehicle's password.
  5. Engine Oil Life Remaining--When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was replaced.

Setup for Component Replacement

The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.

    • If any of the following components are replaced, an Idle Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to Idle Learn .
      • Throttle body assembly
      • ECM
    • If any of the following components are replaced, a Clutch Pedal Position Sensor Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to Clutch Pedal Position Sensor Learn .
      • Clutch pedal
      • Clutch pedal position sensor

Engine Control Module Programming and Setup 6.0L

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.

ECM Replacement

Warning: Replacement or reprogramming of the ECM, or replacement of the clutch pedal position sensor (CPPS) or clutch pedal requires that a CPPS learn procedure be performed. Failure to perform the CPPS learn procedure may result in personal injury or damage to the vehicle or its components if the vehicle is in gear and the starter motor is accidentally engaged.

If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed:

Note: When replacing the ECM, the ECM must be reset prior to removal. Failure to perform this procedure will result in the inability to:

       • Test the ECM for warranty purposes.
       • Install the ECM into other vehicles.

  1. ECM reset procedure
  2. ECM reprogramming--Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .
  3. The Throttle Learn procedure--Refer to Throttle Learn .
  4. The CKP Variation Learn/CASE-Crank Angle Sensing Error procedure--Refer to Customer Concern Verification Sheets .
  5. The Theft Deterrent Programming--Refer to Theft Deterrent Control Module Programming and Setup .
  6. The Clutch Pedal Position Sensor Learn--Refer to Clutch Pedal Position Sensor Learn .

ECM Reprogramming

Warning: Replacement or reprogramming of the ECM, or replacement of the clutch pedal position sensor (CPPS) or clutch pedal requires that a CPPS learn procedure be performed. Failure to perform the CPPS learn procedure may result in personal injury or damage to the vehicle or its components if the vehicle is in gear and the starter motor is accidentally engaged.

    • If the ECM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .
    • The Clutch Pedal Position Sensor Learn--Refer to Clutch Pedal Position Sensor Learn .
    • Engine Oil Life Remaining - When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.

Setup for Component Replacement

The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.

If any of the following components are replaced, a CKP Variation Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to Customer Concern Verification Sheets .

    • Engine replacement
    • Any engine repair that disturbs the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor or its relationship with the crankshaft reluctor wheel.
    • CKP sensor
If the throttle body is replaced, a Throttle Learn procedure must be performed. Refer to Throttle Learn .

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the proceeding procedures.
