Steering Gear Replacement Non-Rack and Pinion

Special Tools

J 24319-B Steering Linkage and Tie Rod Puller

1. Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
2. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.

Notice: Do not start the vehicle with any power steering gear inlet or outlet hoses disconnected. When disconnected, plug or cap all openings of components. Failure to do so could result in contamination or loss of power steering fluid and damage to the system.

4. Remove the engine shield, if equipped. Refer to Engine Shield Replacement.
5. If equipped with a diesel engine, remove the left wheelhouse liner. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Left Side.
6. Disconnect the steering hoses from the steering gear.
7. Disconnect the steering shaft coupling from the steering gear. Refer to Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement.




Important: Discard the pitman arm nut.

8. Remove the pitman arm nut (1).



9. Separate the pitman arm from the relay rod using puller J 24319-B .



10. Remove the steering gear bolts (1).
11. Remove the steering gear from the vehicle.
12. Transfer the pitman arm as necessary. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement.

1. Install the pitman arm if necessary. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement.
2. Install the steering gear to the vehicle.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.





Important: Start all of the steering gear bolts by hand and fully seat them before finalizing the torque.

3. Install the steering gear bolts (1).

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 150 N·m (110 lb ft).




4. Install the pitman arm to the relay rod.
5. Install the pitman arm nut (1).

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 62 N·m (46 lb ft).

6. Connect the power steering hoses to the steering gear.

Tighten
Tighten the hoses fittings to 32 N·m (24 lb ft).

7. Connect the steering shaft coupling. Refer to Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement.
8. Clean any excess fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
9. If equipped with a diesel engine, install the left wheelhouse liner. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement - Left Side.
10. Install the engine shield, if equipped. Refer to Engine Shield Replacement.
11. Lower the vehicle.
12. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.

Steering Gear Replacement Two Mode Hybrid

Danger: Always perform the High Voltage Disabling procedure prior to servicing any High Voltage component or connection. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and proper procedures must be followed.

The High Voltage Disabling procedure will perform the following tasks:

•	Identify how to disable high voltage.

•	Identify how to test for the presence of high voltage.

•	Identify condition under which high voltage is always present and personal protection equipment (PPE) and proper procedures must be followed.

Failure to follow the procedures exactly as written may result in serious injury or death.

Important: The steering gear harness is not repairable. Only replace the harness and never attempt to repair it.

Important: The wiring harness protective cover is intended to keep the wiring harness connectors contaminant free. Do not remove the protective cover from the power steering assist motor wiring harness connectors until the harness has been routed to the correct position.

1. Perform the high voltage disabling procedure. Refer to High Voltage Disabling.
2. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.



3. Remove the steering shaft coupling bolt (1) at the steering gear.
4. Separate the steering shaft coupling from the steering gear.



5. Remove the steering linkage outer tie rod nuts from the steering linkage outer tie rods (1) and discard them.
6. Separate the steering linkage outer tie rods from the steering knuckles.
7. Support the steering gear with jackstands.



8. Remove the steering gear bolts (1) from the left side of the steering gear.



9. Remove the steering gear bolts (1) from the right side of the steering gear.
10. Remove the steering gear from the vehicle.
11. Transfer any parts as needed.

1. Position the steering gear in the vehicle and support it with jackstands.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.





Important: Start all steering gear bolts by hand before finalizing the torques.

2. Install the steering gear bolts (1) at the right side of the steering gear.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).




3. Install the steering gear bolts (1) to the left side of the steering gear.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 200 N·m (148 lb ft).




4. Connect the steering linkage outer tie rods (1) to the steering knuckles.
5. Install the new steering linkage outer tie rod nuts.

Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).




6. Connect the steering shaft coupling to the steering gear.
7. Install the steering shaft coupling bolt (1) at the steering gear.

Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

8. Install the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
9. Perform the high voltage enabling procedure. Refer to High Voltage Enabling.
10. Perform the power steering control module setup procedure. Refer to Power Steering Control Module Programming and Setup.
