Starter Replacement 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L Engines

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 662092  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Remove the engine oil level indicator tube fasteners and position aside. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  5. Remove the transmission cover bolt.

  6. Object Number: 662999  Size: SH
  7. Remove the front axle mounting bracket nut.
  8. Important: DO NOT remove the bolt.

  9. Reposition the front axle mounting bracket bolt until the bolt tip is flush with the support bushing.

  10. Object Number: 663527  Size: SH
  11. Remove the starter bolts.
  12. Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
  13. Slide the starter forward until the starter clears the transmission.

  15. Remove the starter lead nut (3).
  16. Remove the starter lead (2) from the starter.

  18. Remove the positive cable nut (2).
  19. Remove the positive cable from the starter.

  21. Place the starter on a workbench.
  22. If necessary, unsnap the transmission cover from the starter.

  24. If necessary, remove the starter heat shield.

Installation Procedure

  1. If necessary, install the starter heat shield.

  2. Object Number: 663489  Size: SH
  3. If necessary, snap the transmission cover to the starter.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 759622  Size: SH
  5. Install the positive cable to the starter.
  6. Install the positive cable nut (2).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the positive cable nut to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  8. Install the starter lead (2) to the starter.
  9. Install the starter lead nut (3).
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the starter lead nut to 3.4 N·m (30 lb in).

  11. Position the starter into place.
  12. Install the starter bolts.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the starter bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  14. Connect the oil level sensor electrical connector.

  15. Object Number: 662999  Size: SH
  16. Position the front axle mounting bracket bolt until the bolt is fully seated.
  17. Install the front axle mounting bracket nut.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the front axle mounting bracket nut to 95 N·m (70 lb ft).


    Object Number: 663487  Size: SH
  19. Install the transmission cover bolt.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission cover bolt to 9 N·m (80 lb in).


    Object Number: 309158  Size: SH
  21. If necessary, install the oil pan skid plate and bolts.
  22. Tighten
    Tighten the oil pan skid plate bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  23. If necessary, install the engine shield and bolts.
  24. Tighten
    Tighten the engine shield bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26. Install the engine oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .

  27. Object Number: 662092  Size: SH
  28. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .

Starter Replacement 8.1L Engine

Removal Procedure

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  4. If necessary, remove the engine shield bolts and shield.

  5. Object Number: 309158  Size: SH
  6. If necessary, remove the oil pan skid plate bolts and plate.

  7. Object Number: 662999  Size: SH
  8. Remove the front axle mounting bracket nut.
  9. Important: DO NOT remove the bolt.

  10. Reposition the front axle mounting bracket bolt until the bolt tip is flush with the support bushing.

  12. Remove the starter bolts.
  13. Slide the starter forward until the starter clears the transmission.

  15. Remove the starter lead nut.
  16. Remove the starter lead (4) from the starter.

  18. Remove the positive cable nut.
  19. Remove the positive cable from the starter.

  21. If necessary, remove the starter heat shield bolts, nut, and shield.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 747162  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. If necessary, install the starter heat shield, nut and bolts.
  2. Tighten

        • Tighten the bolts to 3 N·m (35 lb in).
        • Tighten the nut to 5 N·m (44 lb in).

  3. Install the positive cable to the starter.
  4. Install the positive cable nut.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  6. Install the starter lead (4) to the starter.
  7. Install the starter lead nut.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 3.4 N·m (30 lb in).

  9. Position the starter into place.
  10. Install the starter bolts.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
