Removal Procedure

    Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  3. Remove the tilt lever from steering column. Refer to Tilt Lever Replacement - On Vehicle .
  4. Important: You must check for 2 pan head tapping screws (1) in the lower trim before removal.

  5. If necessary remove the pan head tapping screws (1) that retain the lower steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  6. If no screws are present, gently unsnap the lower trim cover from the upper trim cover.

  7. Object Number: 328807  Size: SH
  8. Tilt the trim cover down and slide it back in order to disengage the locking tabs.
  9. Remove the lower steering column trim cover.
  10. Slide the shift lever seal up the shift lever.
  11. Important: You must check for 1 TORX head screw (1) in the upper trim cover (2) before removal.

  12. If necessary, remove the screw (1) that retains the upper steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  13. If no screw is present, gently unsnap the upper steering column trim cover.
  14. Remove the upper steering column trim cover.

Installation Procedure

    Important: If the snap on/off feature on the trim covers was damaged during the removal procedure, you must use screws for the installation procedure.

  1. Install the upper steering column trim cover (2).
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. If necessary, install the screw that retains the upper steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the upper steering column trim cover retaining screws to 1.5 N·m (13 lb in).

  5. Install the lower steering column trim cover.
  6. Match the tabs slots onto the lower cover with the locking tabs on the upper cover.
  7. Tilt the lower shroud up.
  8. If no screws were present, gently snap the lower trim cover to the upper trim cover.

  9. Object Number: 415298  Size: SH
  10. If necessary, install the screws (1) that retain the lower steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the lower steering column trim cover retaining screws to 3.5 N·m (31 lb in).

  12. Install the tilt lever to the steering column. Refer to Tilt Lever Replacement - On Vehicle .
  13. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  14. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
