Tools Required

Notice: Before you overhaul the transaxle, clean the exterior thoroughly in order to protect its inner components against dust and dirt. Keep the transaxle in an upright position with the fluid pan on the bottom until all of the fluid has been drained from the transaxle. If you turn the transaxle on its side or over before the fluid stops draining, clutch material or other foreign matter may contaminant the fluid passages of the valve body and case. Failure to follow this precaution may result in unnecessary valve body overhaul.

1. Inspect the rings for cuts or restricted movement in the ring grooves.
2. If the rings are damaged, inspect the ring grooves for debris or burrs.
3. Inspect the thrust washer surfaces for damage. The thrust washer and the thrust bearing surfaces may appear to be polished. This is a normal condition.

Notice: Do not use air powered tools in order to disassemble or assemble any vehicle component. Bolt torques are vital to diagnosis. You can detect bolt torques only when using hand tools. Improper bolt torques can contribute to vehicle repair problems.

1. Remove the torque converter.



2. Remove the torque converter housing bolts (1).



3. Install the J 41626 onto the transmission case.

Caution: To reduce the possibility of personal injury or transmission damage, make sure when following the next step that all bolts for the J 41626 are installed and tightened to 11 N·m (98 lb in).

4. Install the transmission with the J 41626 into the J 3289-20 .
5. Remove the fluid level indicator with the fluid filler tube.
6. Remove the vent hose clamp from the vent elbow at the top of the transmission case.
7. Remove the vent hose.
8. Drain the transmission fluid.
