DTC C0283 w/NW7

Circuit Description

The traction control switch is a momentary-contact, normally-open switch that can be used to disable the traction control system (TCS). Each time the traction control switch is pressed, the TCS enabled/disabled status changes. When TCS is disabled, the electronic brake control module (EBCM) illuminates the traction off indicator by opening the service traction control signal circuit.

Conditions for Running the DTC

The ignition is ON.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The EBCM detects low voltage on the traction control switch signal circuit for 10 seconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

If equipped, the following actions occur:

    • The EBCM disables the TCS.
    • The traction off indicator turns ON.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

The conditions for setting the DTC are no longer present and you use the scan tool Clear DTCs function.

Diagnostic Aids

Thoroughly inspect connections or circuitry that may cause an intermittent malfunction. Refer to the following:

    •  Testing for Electrical Intermittents
    •  Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections
    •  Wiring Repairs
    •  Connector Repairs

Test Description

The number below refers to the step number on the diagnostic table.

  1. This step tests the traction control switch circuitry. If the fuse opens when you perform this test, the traction control switch signal circuit is shorted to ground.

  1. Use a scan tool in order to clear the DTCs.
  2. Turn OFF the ignition for 5 seconds.
  3. Start the engine and allow the engine to run for at least 20 seconds.

Does the DTC set?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the traction control switch harness connector. Refer to Electronic Traction Control Switch Replacement .
  3. Turn ON the ignition.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the ignition 1 voltage circuit and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs.
  2. Turn OFF the ignition.
  3. Connect a fused jumper wire between the ignition 1 voltage circuit and the traction control switch signal circuit at the traction control switch harness connector.
  4. Start the engine and allow the engine to run for at least 20 seconds.

Does the DTC set?

Go to Step 5

Test the traction control switch signal circuit for an open or a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the electronic brake control module (EBCM). Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Important: Following EBCM replacement, use the scan tool to perform the Tire Size Calibration procedure.

Replace the EBCM. Refer to Electronic Brake Control Module Replacement .

DTC C0283 w/JL4

Circuit Description

The VSES mode switch is a momentary-contact switch that can be used to limit the VSES function. Each time the mode switch is pressed, the VSES full stability/limited status changes. When the VSES mode switch is released, voltage on the VSES mode switch signal circuit is approximately 4.5 volts. When the VSES mode switch is pressed, voltage on the VSES mode switch signal circuit is approximately 9 volts.

Conditions for Running the DTC

In order to detect a continuously low or high VSES mode switch signal:

The ignition is ON.

OR:

In order to detect a continuously pressed VSES mode switch:

    • The ignition is ON.
    • The engine speed is greater than 450 RPM.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

Either of the following conditions may cause DTC C0283 to set:

    • The VSES mode switch signal is detected as excessively low or high for 200 milliseconds.
    • The VSES mode switch is detected as pressed for 60 seconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The EBCM disables the VSES.
    • The message center displays the SERVICE STABILITY SYSTEM message.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

The conditions for setting the DTC are no longer present and you use the scan tool Clear DTCs function.

Diagnostic Aids

Press and release the VSES mode switch several times while observing the message center in order to verify that the VSES full stability/limited status changes each time the switch is pressed and that DTC C0283 does not set. Using the scan tool in order to observe the Mode Switch Pressed or Released status may also be helpful in diagnosing an intermittent fault within the switch.

  1. Use a scan tool in order to clear the DTCs.
  2. Turn OFF the ignition for 5 seconds.
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Observe the scan tool for up to 60 seconds in order to verify the DTC resets.

  3. Turn ON the ignition.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the ignition 3 voltage circuit and a good ground.

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Reconnect the VSES mode switch harness connector.
  3. Turn ON the ignition.
  4. Backprobe the VSES mode switch harness connector in order to connect a DMM between the VSES mode switch signal circuit and a good ground. Refer to Probing Electrical Connectors in Wiring Systems.
  5. Measure the DC voltage on the VSES mode switch signal circuit.

Does the VSES mode switch signal measure within the specified range?

2-7 V

  1. Press and hold the VSES mode switch.
  2. Use a DMM in order to measure the DC voltage on the VSES mode switch signal circuit.

Does the VSES mode switch signal measure within the specified range?

7-11 V

Test the VSES mode switch signal circuit for a short to ground or a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  2. Disconnect from the EBCM, the harness connector containing the VSES mode switch signal circuit.
  3. Turn ON the ignition.
  4. Use a DMM in order to measure the DC voltage on the VSES mode switch signal circuit.

Does the VSES mode switch signal measure within the specified range?

2-7 V
