Removal Procedure

    Notice: When lifting the vehicle do not allow the jack to touch the rear steering gear. If the jack touches the rear steering gear you may damage the gear or the rack and pinion boots. If the boots are damaged replace the rack and pinion boot.

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  2. Object Number: 385791  Size: SH
  3. Remove the spare tire from the vehicle.

  4. Object Number: 750414  Size: SH
  5. Remove the bolts (1) retaining the steering gear motor (2) to the steering gear.
  6. Remove the steering gear motor from the steering gear.
  7. Cover the steering gear motor opening to keep contamination out of the oil in the planetary gear assembly.
  8. Remove the wiring harness from the retaining clips.

  10. Disconnect the wiring harness from the control module (2).

  11. Object Number: 747768  Size: SH
  12. Disconnect the electrical connector (1) from the rear position sensor.
  13. Remove the steering gear motor and wiring harness from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 750415  Size: SH

    Important: Make sure the O-ring is seated in the O-ring groove.

  1. Install the O-ring seal (1) to the steering gear.
  2. Install the steering gear motor (2) to the vehicle.

  3. Object Number: 750414  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the bolts (1) retaining the steering gear motor (2) to the steering gear.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the 6 mm (0.24 in) steering gear motor retaining bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

    Tighten
    Tighten the 4 mm (0.16 in) steering gear motor retaining bolts to 4 N·m (35 lb in).

    Important: Route the wiring harness in the same location as the wiring was removed.

  6. Connect the electrical connectors to the control module (2).

  7. Object Number: 747768  Size: SH
  8. Connect the electrical connector (1) to the rear position sensor.
  9. Connect the wire harness retaining clips.

  10. Object Number: 385791  Size: SH
  11. Install the spare tire to the vehicle.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
