Diagnostic Aids

    • The wait to start indicator illuminates with the ignition ON and the engine OFF. The wait to start indicator will not illuminate during post-start glow plug operation.
    • Ensure that the engine is not at full operating temperature before performing this diagnostic. The wait to start indicator will stay ON longer at lower engine temperatures.
    • For intermittent diagnosis, refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections .

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

  1. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  2. Observe the wait to start indicator in the message center.

Does the wait to start indicator not illuminate in the message center and then turn OFF?

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the engine control module (ECM).
  3. Connect a 3-ampere fused jumper wire between the wait to start indicator control circuit and a good ground.
  4. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.

Does the wait to start indicator illuminate in the message center and then turn OFF?

Test the wait to start indicator control circuit for an open, for a short to voltage or for a high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs .

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the message center. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and to Connector Repairs .
