Engine Flywheel Replacement Automatic Transmission

Tools Required

    • J 44643 Flywheel Holding Tool
    • J 45059 Angle Meter

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 660308  Size: SH
  1. Remove the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement .
  2. Install J 44643 in order to hold the flywheel.

  3. Object Number: 1334818  Size: SH

    Caution: When removing, handling or installing this component wear protective gloves. The sharp edges on the component may be very sharp and may cause injury.

  4. Remove and discard the flywheel bolts.
  5. Remove the flywheel washer and flywheel.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the flywheel.
  2. Install the flywheel washer with the beveled side facing the engine.
  3. Notice: This component uses bolts with a preapplied molybdenum disulfide coating for thread lubrication. Do not remove the coating or use any additional lubricant. Improperly lubricated threads will adversely affect the bolt torque and clamp load. Improper bolt torque and clamp load can lead to engine damage.

  4. Install NEW flywheel bolts.
  5. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  6. Tighten the flywheel bolts in the proper sequence.
  7. Tighten

    1. Tighten the bolts a first pass to 79 N·m (58 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the bolts a second pass to 60 degrees using J 45059 .
    3. Tighten the bolts a final pass an additional 60 degrees using J 45059 .

  8. Remove J 44643 from the flywheel.
  9. Install the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement .

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 660308  Size: SH
  1. Remove the clutch. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement .
  2. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .
  3. Install J 44643 in order to hold the flywheel.

  4. Object Number: 688118  Size: SH

    Important: DO NOT use the clutch pressure plate bolts. Use a bolt of the correct thread and length that protrudes enough to use a pry bar.

  5. Install 2 bolts into the clutch pressure plate mounting hole 180 degrees apart.
  6. Using a long pry bar, turn the secondary ring of the dual mass flywheel clockwise until the flywheel mounting bolts can be accessed. It may be required to turn the secondary ring past the bolt holes in order to compensate the spring tension.

  7. Object Number: 688119  Size: SH
  8. Remove and discard the flywheel bolts.
  9. Remove the flywheel.

  10. Object Number: 688124  Size: SH
  11. If necessary, remove the pilot bearing.
  12. If required, clean and inspect the flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Cleaning and Inspection .

  1. If necessary, install a NEW pilot bearing.
  2. Caution: When removing, handling or installing this component wear protective gloves. The sharp edges on the component may be very sharp and may cause injury.

  3. Install the flywheel.

  7. Tighten the flywheel bolts in the proper sequence.
  8. Tighten

    1. Tighten the bolts a first pass to 79 N·m (58 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the bolts a second pass to 60 degrees using J 45059 .
    3. Tighten the bolts a final pass an additional 60 degrees using J 45059 .
  9. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .
  10. Install the clutch. Refer to Clutch Assembly Replacement .
