Shock Absorber Replacement 6500, 7500, 8500

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 830287  Size: SH

    Important: If a shock absorber is faulty, replace the complete unit. Refer to Suspension Strut and Shock Absorber Testing - On Vehicle .

  1. Set the parking brake.
  2. Block the front and rear wheels.
  3. Remove the upper nut and the washer.
  4. Remove the shock absorber from the crossmember.
  5. Remove the lower nut and the washer .
  6. Remove the shock absorber from the lower mounting bracket .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the shock absorber to the lower mounting bracket.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the washer and the nut.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the lower shock absorber nut to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).

  5. Install the shock absorber to the crossmember.
  6. Install the upper washer and the nut.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the upper shock absorber nut to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).

Shock Absorber Replacement 4500, 5500 w/Bolt Type Shocks

Removal Procedure

  1. Set the parking brake.
  2. Block the front and rear wheels.
  3. Remove the upper nut and washer.
  4. Remove the shock absorber from the upper bracket.

  6. Remove the lower nut and the washer .
  7. Remove the shock absorber from the axle .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 830291  Size: SH
  1. Install the shock absorber to the axle.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the bolt and the nut.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the lower shock absorber nut to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).

  5. Install the shock absorber to the upper bracket.
  6. Install the upper washer and the nut.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the upper shock absorber nut to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).

Shock Absorber Replacement 4500, 5500 w/Stud Type Shocks

Removal Procedure

    Important: If a shock absorber is faulty, replace the complete unit. Refer to Suspension Strut and Shock Absorber Testing - On Vehicle .

  1. Set the parking brake.
  2. Block the front and rear wheels.
  3. Remove the upper nut, washer and the insulator.
  4. Remove the shock absorber from the upper bracket.

  6. Remove the lower nut, washer, and the insulator .
  7. Remove the shock absorber from the lower mounting bracket .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 830288  Size: SH
  1. Install the washer and insulator onto the upper and lower shock absorber if it was removed.
  2. Install the shock absorber to the lower mounting bracket.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the insulator, washer, and the nut.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the lower shock absorber nut to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).

  6. Install the shock absorber to the upper bracket.
  7. Install the upper insulator, washer, and the nut.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the upper shock absorber nut to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).

Removal Procedure

  1. Set the parking brake.
  2. Block the front and rear wheels.
  3. Remove the upper nut and the washer.
  4. Remove the shock absorber from the crossmember.
  5. Remove the lower nut and the washer .
  6. Remove the shock absorber from the lower mounting bracket .

Preliminary Procedure

Block the front and rear wheels to prevent vehicle movement.

Rear Shock Lower Nut

Tip
Remove the lower shock nuts from the equalizing beam.

Tighten
108 N·m (80 lb ft)

Rear Shock Washer

Tip
Remove the lower shock washers from the shock stud.

Rear Shock Insulator

Tip
Remove the shock insulator form the shock stud.

4

Rear Shock Upper Nut

Tip
Remove the rear shock upper nut from the upper frame bracket.

Tighten
217 N·m (160 lb ft)

Rear Shock Upper Bolt

Tip
Remove the rear shock upper bolt from the frame bracket.

6

Rear Shock

Tip
Remove the shock from the vehicle.
