Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 172994  Size: SH
  1. Remove the PCV tube from the air cleaner outlet duct and the valve rocker arm cover.
  2. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs for the right side of the engine. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.3L.
  3. Remove the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.3L.

  4. Object Number: 531473  Size: SH
  5. Unfasten the heater hose retainer above the valve rocker arm cover.
  6. Move and secure the heater hoses aside.

  7. Object Number: 517077  Size: SH
  8. Remove the bolt (3) holding the engine wiring harness bracket to the generator.
  9. Disconnect the crankcase position (CKP) sensor electrical connector (2).
  10. Move and secure the engine wiring harness aside.

  11. Object Number: 328568  Size: SH
  12. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  13. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets.
  14. Discard the valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets.

  15. Object Number: 480524  Size: SH
  16. Remove the valve rocker arm cover.

  17. Object Number: 328573  Size: SH
  18. Remove the valve rocker arm cover gasket.
  19. Discard the valve rocker arm cover gasket.

  20. Object Number: 334508  Size: SH
  21. Clean the valve rocker arm cover in cleaning solvent.
  22. Dry the valve rocker arm cover with compressed air.
  23. Inspect the valve rocker arm cover for the following:
  24. • Damage to the PCV valve grommet (1)
    • Damage to the bolt holes (2)
    • A damaged valve rocker arm cover may interfere with the valve rocker arms.
    • Damage to the exterior of the valve rocker arm cover (3)
    • Gouges or damage to the sealing surface (4)
    • Damage to the oil fill tube grommet (5)
    • Restrictions to the ventilation system passages

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 328573  Size: SH

    Important: Do not reuse the valve cover gasket or the valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets.

  1. Install the NEW valve rocker arm cover gasket into the groove of the valve rocker arm cover.
  2. Install the NEW valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets into the valve rocker arm cover.

  3. Object Number: 480524  Size: SH
  4. Install the valve rocker arm cover onto the cylinder head.

  5. Object Number: 328568  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  8. Position the engine wiring harness.
  9. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector (2).
  10. Install the engine wiring harness and the bolt (3) to the generator mounting bracket.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the engine wiring harness bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  12. Position the heater hoses.
  13. Install the heater hoses in the retainer above the valve rocker arm cover.
  14. Install the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.3L.
  15. Connect the spark plug wires to the spark plugs for the right side of the engine. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.3L.

  17. Install the PCV tube to the air cleaner outlet duct and the valve rocker arm cover.
