The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may state the radio mutes slightly or the volume reduces by itself at times. You may notice that the concern will be more apparent in areas where there is low or weak radio reception. This condition is normally seen on FM stations that have medium signal strength in the area of concern and that there may be other factors present such as hilly terrain areas or many buildings present. FM signals, as are any higher frequency radio transmissions, are "line of sight" receivable signals. When a buildings or irregular terrain is present, you could get a "splatter" effect on the signal path to the receiver, causing the momentary reduction in volume.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Do not replace the radio or any other radio antenna components for this concern. This is a normal characteristic of vehicles equipped with a (RPO UVA) dual play radio. When you start to lose the radio reception, the radio will automatically mute down the volume to cancel out some of the radio static caused by a weak signal.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
