DTC Descriptors

DTC P0831: Clutch Pedal Switch 1 Circuit Low Voltage

DTC P0833: Clutch Pedal Switch 2 Circuit

Circuit/System Description

The clutch pedal position (CPP) switch consist of a normally open switch refer to as, the bottom of travel switch and a normally closed switch refer to as, the top of travel switch. The normally closed top of travel switch is supplied 12 V from the underhood fuse block, with a low reference circuit to the engine control module (ECM). The normally open bottom of travel switch is supplied 12 V on the signal circuit from the ECM, with a discreet ground circuit to the chassis. The ECM continuously monitors the voltage levels on these two circuits to determine the position of the clutch pedal.

Conditions for Running the DTC

P0831 or P0833

    • The engine is running.
    • DTCs P0502 or P0503 are not set.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

P0831

The ECM detects a short to B+ on the CPP switch circuit with the clutch pedal released.

P0833

The ECM detects 7 changes in vehicle speed greater than 38 km/h (24 mph) without the ECM detecting a clutch pedal transition.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P0831 and P0833 are type C DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P0831 and P0833 are type C DTC.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool CPP switch parameter while depressing and releasing the clutch pedal. The CPP parameter should change between applied and released.
  2. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data list.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the CPP switch harness connector.
  2. Test for less than 5 Ω between the ground circuit terminal C and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Test for less than 5 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal F and ground.
  5. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
  6. Ignition ON, test for less than 1 V on the low reference circuit terminal F and ground.
  7. If greater than the specified value, test the low reference circuit for a short to B+. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
  8. Test for 11-13 V on the signal circuit terminal D and ground.
  9. If not within the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
  10. Test for 11-13 V on the B+ circuit terminal E and ground.
  11. If not within the specified value, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuits test normal, refer to Symptoms - Engine Electrical.
  12. If all circuits test normal, replace the CPP switch.

Component Testing

  1. Clutch pedal released, test for infinite Ω between terminals C and D on the CPP switch.
  2. If less than the specified value, replace the CPP switch.
  3. Clutch pedal depressed, test for less than 1 Ω between terminals C and D on the CPP switch.
  4. If greater than the specified value, replace the CPP switch.
  5. Clutch pedal released, test for less than 1 Ω between terminal E and F on the CPP switch.
  6. If greater than the specified value, replace the CPP switch.
  7. Clutch pedal depressed, test for infinite Ω between terminals E and F on the CPP switch.
  8. If less than the specified value, replace the CPP switch.

Repair Instructions
