    • J 8092 Universal Driver Handle - ¾ in - 10
    • J 21128 Axle Pinion Oil Seal Installer
    • J 23690 Bearing Installer
    • J 2619-01 Slide Hammer
    • J 29712 Wheel Bearing Remover
    • J 44685 Rear Axle Seal and Bearing Remover
    • J 45853 Rear Axle Bearing/Seal Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Remove the axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft Replacement .
  3. If replacing only the axle shaft seal, remove the seal using a suitable seal removal tool.

  4. Object Number: 688157  Size: SH
  5. If replacing the rear axle shaft seal and the bearing on the 8.6 inch axle, install the J 44685  (1) and the J 2619-01  (2) into the axle housing behind the axle bearing.
  6. Remove the axle shaft seal and the bearing by pulling on the J 2619-01 .

  7. Object Number: 685944  Size: SH
  8. If replacing the rear axle shaft seal and the bearing on the 9.75 inch axle, install the J 29712 into the axle housing behind the axle bearing.
  9. Remove the axle shaft seal and the bearing by tightening the nut on the J 29712 .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 695758  Size: SH
  1. Install the axle shaft bearing using the J 23690 , 8.6 inch axle, or the J 45853 , 9.75 inch axle (1) and the J 8092  (2).
  2. Drive the axle shaft bearing into the axle housing until the tool bottoms against the tube.

  3. Object Number: 695762  Size: SH
  4. For the 8.6 inch axle, install the axle shaft seal using the J 21128 .
  5. Ensure the seal is fully seated in the axle tube.


    Object Number: 897721  Size: SH
  6. For the 9.75 inch axle, install the axle shaft seal using the J 45853  (2) and the J 8092  (1).
  7. Ensure the seal is fully seated in the axle tube.

  8. Install the axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft Replacement .
  9. Fill the rear axle. Refer to Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement .
  10. Lower the vehicle.
