Starter Replacement 4.8L /5.3L /6.0L

Removal Procedure

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .

  4. Remove the right transmission cover bolt, if equipped.
  5. Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector.

  6. Object Number: 663527  Size: SH
  7. Remove the starter bolts.
  8. Slide the starter forward until the starter clears the transmission.

  9. Object Number: 1202783  Size: SH
  10. Remove the starter solenoid nut.
  11. Remove the starter lead from the solenoid stud.
  12. Remove the starter lead nut.
  13. Remove the positive cable from the starter stud.
  14. Place the starter on a workbench.

  16. Unsnap the transmission cover from the starter, if equipped.

  18. If necessary, remove the starter shield.

Installation Procedure

  1. If necessary, install the starter shield.

  2. Object Number: 663489  Size: SH
  3. Snap the transmission cover to the starter, if equipped.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1202783  Size: SH
  5. Install the positive cable to the starter stud.
  6. Install the starter lead nut.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the starter lead nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  8. Install the starter solenoid lead to the solenoid stud.
  9. Install the starter solenoid nut.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the starter solenoid nut to 3.4 N·m (30 lb in).

  11. Slide the starter rearward.
  12. Install the starter bolts.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the starter bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  14. Install the right transmission cover bolt, if equipped.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission cover bolt to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  16. Connect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .

Starter Replacement 4.3L

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .

  4. Remove the starter motor brackets and shields, if equipped.

  5. Object Number: 184054  Size: SH
  6. Disconnect the wires from the starter solenoid.

  7. Object Number: 360232  Size: SH
  8. Remove the bolts and the shims, if present, from the starter motor.
  9. Remove the starter motor from the engine.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  1. Install the starter motor to the engine.
  2. Install the bolts and the shims, if present, to the starter motor.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  4. Connect the wires to the starter solenoid.
  5. Tighten

        • Tighten the starter lead nut to the solenoid to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
        • Tighten the starter solenoid wires to the solenoid to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  6. Install the starter motor brackets and shields.
  7. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
