Fan Clutch Replacement 4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L, and 6.5L

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 41240 Fan Clutch Wrench and Spanner
    • J 41240-5A Fan Clutch Wrench

    Caution: Do not use or attempt to repair a damaged cooling fan assembly. Replace damaged fans with new assemblies. An unbalanced cooling fan could fly apart causing personal injury and property damage.

  1. Remove the air cleaner and the duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement 4.3L or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement 5.0/5.7L or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement 6.5L in Engine Controls.
  2. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement .

  4. Remove the upper radiator shroud from the radiator. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 362333  Size: SH
  6. Remove the fan and the clutch on the 4.3L, 5.0L and 5.7L using the J 41240 . Use the Spanner in order to hold the Pulley.
  7. Remove the fan and the clutch on the 6.5L using the J 41240-5A . Use the Spanner of the J 41240 in order to hold the Pulley.

  8. Remove the retaining bolts from the fan and clutch.
  9. Remove the fan from the clutch.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the fan to the clutch.

  2. Object Number: 160878  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the retaining bolts to the fan and clutch.
  4. Tighten

        • Tighten the 4.3L, 5.0L, and 5.7L fan to clutch bolts to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).
        • Tighten the 6.5L Diesel fan to clutch bolts to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  5. Install the fan and clutch on the 4.3L, 5.0L and 5.7L using the J 41240 . Use the Spanner in order to hold the pulley.
  6. Install the fan and clutch on the 6.5L using the J 41240-5A and J 41240 . Use the Spanner in order to hold the pulley.

    Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 57 N·m (42 lb ft).

  7. Install the upper radiator shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement .
  8. Install the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement .
  9. Install the air cleaner and the duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement 4.3L or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement 5.0/5.7L or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement 6.5L in Engine Controls.

Fan Clutch Replacement 7.4L

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the air cleaner and the duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
  2. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement
  3. Remove the upper radiator shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement .
  4. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.

  5. Object Number: 71667  Size: SH
  6. Remove the fan and the clutch retaining nuts from the coolant pump pulley.
  7. Remove the fan and the clutch from the vehicle.

  8. Object Number: 160879  Size: SH
  9. Remove the retaining bolts from the fan and clutch.
  10. Separate the fan and clutch.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the fan to the clutch.

  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 33 N·m(24 lb ft).

  5. Install the fan and the clutch to the vehicle.
  6. Install the fan and the clutch retaining nuts to the coolant pump pulley.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 24 N·m (18 lb ft).

  8. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  9. Install the upper radiator shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement .
  10. Install the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement .
  11. Install the air cleaner and the duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
