In order to inspect for conditions with the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) and the vehicle control module (VCM), perform the following diagnostic tests:

    • ABS Diagnostic System Check in Antilock Brakes
    • Powertrain OBD System Check in Engine Controls

  1. Disconnect the connector at the instrument cluster.
  2. Disconnect connector C4 at the VCM.
  3. Connect a J 39200 between the instrument cluster connector, cavity B14 for CKT 389 (DK GRN), and ground.

Is continuity present?

--

Go to Step 4

Repair the short to ground in CKT 389 (DK GRN) between the VCM and the instrument cluster.

Is the speedometer and/or the odometer operative?

--

Connect a J 39200 in CKT 389 (DK GRN) between the instrument cluster connector, cavity B14 and VCM connector C4, cavity 4.

Is continuity present?

Replace the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .

Is the speedometer and/or the odometer operative?

Repair the open in CKT 389 (DK GRN) between the VCM and the instrument cluster.

  1. Disconnect the connector at the instrument cluster.
  2. Disconnect the connector at the VSS buffer and powertrain control module (PCM) connector C2.
  3. Connect a J 39200 between the instrument cluster connector, cavity B14 for CKT 389 (DK GRN), and ground.

Is continuity present?

Repair the short to ground in CKT 389 (DK GRN) between the VCM and the VSS buffer and the PCM and the instrument cluster.

Is the speedometer and/or the odometer operative?

Connect a J 39200 in CKT 389 (DK GRN) between the instrument cluster connector, cavity B14 and the VSS buffer connector, cavity 15 (Diesel).

Is continuity present?

Replace the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .

Repair the open in CKT 389 (DK GRN) between the VSS buffer and the instrument cluster.

  2. The Vehicle Control Module (VCM)

  2. Disconnect the connector C4 at the VCM.
  3. Connect a J 39200 between the following components
  4. • The instrument cluster connector cavity B14 for the CKT 389 (GRN) wire
    • Ground

  1. Locate the short to ground on the CKT 389 (DK GRN) wire between following components:
  2. • The VCM
    • The instrument cluster
  3. Repair the short to ground on the CKT 389 (DK GRN) wire between following components:
  4. • The VCM
    • The instrument cluster

Connect a J 39200 between the following components:

    • The instrument cluster connector cavity B14
    • The VCM connector C4 cavity 4

Is continuity present?

  1. Locate the open in the CKT 389 (DK GRN) wire between the following components:
  2. • The VCM
    • The instrument cluster
  3. Repair the open in the CKT 389 (DK GRN) wire between the following components:
  4. • The VCM
    • The instrument cluster

  4. • The instrument cluster connector cavity B14 for the CKT 389 (GRN) wire
    • Ground

  2. • The VSSB
    • The PCM
    • The instrument cluster
  3. Repair the short to ground on the CKT 389 (DK GRN) wire between following components:

    • The instrument cluster

Connect a J 39200 between the following components:

    • The instrument cluster connector cavity B14
    • The VSSB connector cavity 15 for the CKT 389 (DK GRN) wire
