Removal Procedure

J 1859-A Steering Wheel Puller Set

    Caution: When you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, you must disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

  1. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in SIR.
  2. Mark the relationship of the steering wheel (1) to the column.

  3. Object Number: 309835  Size: SH
  4. Remove the steering wheel and the nut (2).
  5. Use the J 1859-A in order to remove the steering wheel from the column.

Installation Procedure

  1. With the marked relationship references in line, install the steering wheel (1) onto the column.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the steering wheel nut (2).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the steering wheel nut to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).

  5. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in SIR.
