Removal Procedure
  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement 4.3L or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement 5.0/5.7L in Engine Controls.
  2. Remove the air intake duct from the throttle body.
  3. Remove the coolant reservoir or surge tank. Refer to Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement or Surge Tank (Diesel) Replacement .
  4. Remove the bolt securing the engine oil fill tube at the generator bracket.
  5. Remove the bolt securing the engine and transmission oil dipsticks at the generator bracket.
  6. Move the dipsticks and oil fill tube away from the fan shroud.

  7. Remove the upper fan shroud retaining bolts from the top of the radiator.

    8. Object Number: 160871 Size: SH
  8. Remove the upper to lower fan shroud retaining bolts.
  9. Remove the upper fan shroud from the vehicle.
  10. Remove the fan and the clutch from the engine. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement .

  11. Remove the lower fan shroud retaining bolts.
  12. Remove the lower fan shroud from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 160873 Size: SH
  1. Install the lower fan shroud to the vehicle.

    2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  2. Install the retaining bolts to the lower fan shroud.

    3. Tighten
    Tighten the lower fan shroud retaining bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  3. Install the fan and the clutch to the engine. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  4. Install the upper fan shroud to the lower fan shroud.

  5. Install the upper to lower fan shroud retaining bolts.

    6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  6. Reseal the engine oil dipstick tube.
    7. • Apply sealer, GM P/N 12346004 or equivalent to the top end of the oil level indicator tube at the joint.
    • Install the top half of the tube into the lower half of the oil level indicator tube.
  7. Install the bolt securing the engine and transmission oil dipstick at the generator bracket.
  8. Install the bolt securing the engine oil fill tube at the generator bracket.

  9. Install the upper fan shroud retaining bolts to the top of the radiator.

    10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 8 N·m(71 lb in).

  10. Install the coolant reservoir or surge tank. Refer to Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement or Surge Tank (Diesel) Replacement .
  11. Install the air intake duct from the throttle body.
  12. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement 4.3L or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement 5.0/5.7L in Engine Controls.
