Transfer Case Assemble Borg-Warner 4472

Assembly Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 8092 Universal Driver Handle
    • J 7079-2 Driver Handle
    • J 38212 Needle Bearing Installer
    • J 38423 Output Shaft Roller Needle Bearing Installer
    • J 37668 Seal Installer
    • J 38216 Seal Installer
  1. Lubricate all necessary parts with Dextron ™ III Automatic Transmission Fluid or the equivalent.

  2. Object Number: 3054  Size: SH
  3. Install the viscous clutch onto the sun gear shaft.

  4. Object Number: 3052  Size: SH
  5. Install the drive sprocket onto the sun gear shaft assembly.

  6. Object Number: 3051  Size: SH
  7. Install the drive sprocket spacer to the sun gear shaft assembly.

  8. Object Number: 3050  Size: SH
  9. Install the sun gear shaft bearing to the sun gear shaft assembly.

  10. Object Number: 3058  Size: SH
  11. Use the J 7079-2 and the J 38212 in order to install the input shaft pilot bushing into the output shaft assembly.

  12. Object Number: 3039  Size: SH
  13. Install the output shaft assembly to the ring gear.

  14. Object Number: 3038  Size: SH
  15. Install the snap ring to the ring gear.

  16. Object Number: 3059  Size: SH
  17. Use the J 8092 and the J 38423 in order to install the front output shaft bearing to the front cover.

  18. Object Number: 3047  Size: SH
  19. Install the front output shaft bearing snap ring to the front cover.

  20. Object Number: 3060  Size: SH
  21. Use the J 7079-2 and the J 38212 in order to install the bearing to the rear case half.

  22. Object Number: 3037  Size: SH
  23. Install the output shaft assembly and the ring gear through the rear case half.

  24. Object Number: 3036  Size: SH
  25. Install the snap ring to the output shaft bearing

  26. Object Number: 3061  Size: SH
  27. Apply a 1/8 inch bead of RTV sealer (GM P/N 12345739) or the equivalent to the rear extension housing sealing surface.
  28. Install the rear extension housing.

  29. Object Number: 2246  Size: SH
  30. Install the bolts to the rear extension housing.
  31. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 42 N·m (30 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  32. Lubricate the vehicle speed sensor O-ring with transmission fluid.
  33. Install the vehicle speed sensor.

  34. Object Number: 3062  Size: SH
  35. Install the speed sensor bolt.
  36. Tighten
    Tighten the speed sensor bolt to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

  37. Align the water drain hole in the output shaft oil seal with the drain groove in the extension housing.

  38. Object Number: 2228  Size: SH
  39. Use the J 37668 in order to install the output shaft seal.
  40. Lubricate the seal sealing lips with automatic transmission fluid.

  41. Object Number: 3064  Size: SH
  42. Install the planet carrier thrust washer to the output shaft assembly.
  43. • Use petroleum jelly in order to lubricate the washer.
    • Align the thrust washer with the input shaft pilot bearing.

    Object Number: 3046  Size: SH
  44. Install the planet carrier assembly into the ring gear.

  45. Object Number: 3033  Size: SH
  46. Install the sun gear thrust washer to the planet carrier assembly.

  47. Object Number: 3031  Size: SH
  48. Install the sun gear shaft assembly into the planet carrier assembly gears. Align the viscous clutch teeth with the ring gear spline.

  49. Object Number: 3030  Size: SH
  50. Install the input shaft into the input shaft pilot bearing.
  51. • Align the input shaft with the sun gear shaft thrust washer.
    • Align the input shaft with the planet carrier thrust washer.

    Object Number: 3065  Size: SH
  52. Install the driven sprocket onto the front output shaft. Install the driven sprocket with the letter E facing down.

  53. Object Number: 3067  Size: SH
  54. Install the drive chain onto the driven sprocket and front output shaft.

  55. Object Number: 3068  Size: SH
  56. Install the drive chain onto the drive sprocket and install the front output shaft into the output shaft rear bearing.

  57. Object Number: 3025  Size: SH
  58. Install the spacer onto the front output shaft.

  59. Object Number: 3029  Size: SH
  60. Install the magnet.

  61. Object Number: 3069  Size: SH
  62. Apply an 1/8 inch bead of RTV sealer (GM P/N 12345739) or the equivalent to the rear case sealing surfaces.

  63. Object Number: 3072  Size: SH
  64. Install the front cover.

  65. Object Number: 3073  Size: SH
  66. Install the front cover bolts.
  67. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 42 N·m (30 lb ft).


    Object Number: 3074  Size: SH
  68. Use the J 37668 in order to install the front output shaft oil seal.
  69. Lubricate the sealing lips with automatic transmission fluid.


    Object Number: 3076  Size: SH
  70. Use the J 38216 in order to install the input shaft oil seal.
  71. Lubricate the sealing lips with automatic transmission fluid.


    Object Number: 2225  Size: SH
  72. Install the front output flange.

  73. Object Number: 2224  Size: SH
  74. Install the rubber sealing washer.

  75. Object Number: 2223  Size: SH
  76. Install the washer.

  77. Object Number: 2229  Size: SH
  78. Install the nut.
  79. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 108 N·m (80 lb ft).
