Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable(s). Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  3. Remove the instrument cluster assembly. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .
  4. Remove the instrument panel lower extension upper trim panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Extension Trim Plate Replacement .
  5. Remove the instrument panel driver knee bolster deflector assembly and the driver knee bolster inner and outer brackets. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Replacement .
  6. Remove the instrument panel passenger knee bolster inner and outer brackets. Refer to Knee Bolster Bracket Replacement .
  7. Remove the instrument panel upper trim pad. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Pad Replacement .
  8. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  9. Remove the radio, if equipped. Refer to Radio Replacement .
  10. Remove the remote CD player, if equipped. Refer to Remote Compact Disc Player Replacement .
  11. Remove the mounting brackets of the radio and the remote CD player. Refer to CD Changer From Bracket Removal in Entertainment.
  12. Remove the instrument panel compartments, if equipped. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Replacement .
  13. Remove the heater and the A/C control. Refer to Control Assembly Replacement in Heating and Ventilation (Non A/C).
  14. Remove the push-in fasteners that retain the radio, the heater, and the A/C wiring harnesses to the instrument panel carrier.
  15. Remove the bolt that retains the steering column wiring harness to the instrument panel carrier.
  16. Remove the nuts that retain the steering column to the instrument panel carrier. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  17. Remove the instrument cluster wiring harness from the instrument panel carrier.

  19. Remove the bolts that retain the instrument panel carrier to the vehicle.
  20. Carefully rotate the instrument panel carrier out and downward in order to gain access to other components.
  21. Do not remove the heater and A/C vacuum harness retainers from the air ducts.

  22. Disconnect the heater and A/C vacuum harness connector at the lower right of the cowl area.
  23. Remove the bolts that retain the air ducts to the instrument panel carrier.
  24. Remove the air ducts from the instrument panel carrier.
  25. Remove the wiring harness retainers from the instrument panel carrier.

  27. Remove the instrument panel carrier from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the instrument panel carrier to the vehicle.
  2. Install the wiring harness retainers to the instrument panel carrier.
  3. Install the air ducts to the instrument panel carrier.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the bolts that retain the air ducts to the instrument panel carrier.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  7. Connect the heater and A/C vacuum harness connector at the lower right of the cowl area.
  8. Carefully rotate the instrument panel carrier in and upward in order to install additional components.

  10. Install the bolts that retain the instrument panel carrier to the vehicle.
  11. Install the instrument cluster wiring harness to the instrument panel carrier.
  12. Install the nuts that retain the steering column to the instrument panel carrier. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  13. Install the bolt that retains the steering column wiring harness to the instrument panel carrier.
  14. Install the push-in fasteners that retain the radio, the heater, and the A/C wiring harnesses to the instrument panel carrier.
  15. Install the heater and the A/C control. Refer to Control Assembly Replacement in Heating and Ventilation (Non A/C).
  16. Install the instrument panel compartments, if equipped. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Replacement .
  17. Install the mounting brackets of the radio and the remote CD player. Refer to CD Changer From Bracket Removal in Entertainment.
  18. Install the remote CD player, if equipped. Refer to Remote Compact Disc Player Replacement in Entertainment.
  19. Install the radio, if equipped. Refer to Radio Replacement in Entertainment.
  20. Install the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  21. Install the instrument panel upper trim pad. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Pad Replacement .
  22. Install the instrument panel passenger knee bolster inner and outer brackets. Refer to Knee Bolster Bracket Replacement .
  23. Install the instrument panel driver knee bolster deflector assembly and the driver knee bolster inner and outer brackets. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Replacement .
  24. Install the instrument panel lower extension upper trim panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Extension Trim Plate Replacement .
  25. Install the instrument cluster assembly. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .
  26. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
  27. Connect the negative battery cable(s). Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
