Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 525082 Size: SH

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connector from the variable effort steering actuator.
  3. If needed, remove the power steering pump assembly from the vehicle in order to gain access to the variable effort steering actuator (2). Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement .
  4. Remove the retaining clip from the variable effort steering actuator (2).
  5. Important: Note the position of the variable effort steering actuator discharge fitting on the pump reservoir. Mark the reservoir (1) in order to ensure proper alignment during reassembly.

  6. Remove the variable effort steering actuator (2).

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 525082 Size: SH
  1. Align the variable effort steering actuator discharge fitting with the mark on the pump reservoir (1).
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the variable effort steering actuator (2).
  4. Tighten
Tighten the variable effort steering actuator (2) to 50-75 N·m (37-55 lb ft).

  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6. Connect the electrical connector to the variable effort steering actuator (2).
  7. Important: If you are installing a new variable effort steering actuator (2), position the electrical connector before installing the retaining clip.

  8. Install the retaining clip to the variable effort steering actuator (2).
  9. Install the power steering pump to the vehicle, if removed. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement .
