Cruise Control Cable Replacement 4.3L

Removal Procedure

Important: The cruise control cable does not require mechanical adjusting after the replacement. The cruise control module internally adjusts the cable. Refer to Cruise Control Description and Operation for the complete operational details.

    Notice: Do not remove the C-clip from the cruise control connector. The C-clip was not designed for removal. Damage may occur when removing.

  1. Open the hood.

  3. Do not remove the adjuster screw from the end of the cruise control cable. No adjustment will be needed.

  4. Object Number: 580244  Size: SH
  5. Remove the cruise control cable from the throttle linkage.
  6. Use a suitable tool to lightly pry off the end of the cruise control cable from the stud on the throttle lever.

  7. Disconnect the cruise control cable from the round hole in the engine cable bracket.

  9. Disconnect the cruise control cable locator clip from the rectangular hole in the routing bracket.

  10. Object Number: 597101  Size: SH
  11. Remove the cruise control cable from the cruise control module housing.
  12. Important: Do not allow the cruise control ribbon (1) to retract into the module assembly.

  13. Disconnect the cruise control cable bead (2) from the end of the ribbon (1).
  14. Remove the cruise control cable from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the cruise control cable to the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 293672  Size: SH
  3. Remove all bends and twists from the cruise control module ribbon and cable, by rotating until removed.

  4. Object Number: 597101  Size: SH

    Important: 

       • Do not twist the cruise control module ribbon (1).
       • Pull the cruise control cable (2) to verify retention to the ribbon (1).

  5. Attach the cruise control cable bead (2) to the cruise control module ribbon (1).

  6. Object Number: 293695  Size: SH
  7. Check the orientation of the cruise control ribbon buckle to the cable end fitting.

  8. Object Number: 487408  Size: SH
  9. Slide the cruise control cable conduit over the ribbon.
  10. 5.1. Install the tangs to the cruise control module housing.
    5.2. Ensure that the tangs snap securely into place.

  11. Snap the cruise control cable engine-end fitting (2) over the stud (1) on the throttle cam lever.

  12. Object Number: 580230  Size: SH
  13. Connect the cruise control cable conduit fitting to the round hole in the engine cable bracket.
  14. Ensure that the tabs snap securely into the hole.

  15. Connect the cruise control cable locator clip to the rectangular hole in the routing bracket.
  16. 8.1. Route the cruise control cable above the accelerator cable.
    8.2. Ensure that the clip snaps securely into place.

  17. Connect the electrical connection to the cruise control servo module.
  18. Test the systems operation.
  19. Perform the Cruise Control System Functional Test. Refer to Diagnostic System Check - Cruise Control .
  20. Close hood.

Cruise Control Cable Replacement 2.2L

Removal Procedure

Important: The cruise control cable does not require mechanical adjusting after the replacement. The cruise control module internally adjusts the cable. Refer to Cruise Control Description and Operation for the complete operational details.

  1. Disconnect the electrical connector from the cruise control servo module.

  2. Object Number: 528580  Size: SH
  3. Disconnect the cruise control cable engine-end fitting (1) from the slot in the engine throttle bracket.
  4. In order to release the tension on the cruise control adjuster, rotate the cam lever. Disconnect the cruise control cable adjuster (3) from the nail head on the throttle cam lever.

  6. Disconnect the cruise control cable fitting from the cruise control module by carefully prying out the fitting using a flat-bladed tool.

  7. Object Number: 418757  Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the cruise control cable bead from the fitting on the cruise control module ribbon.
  9. Remove the cruise control cable from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 418757  Size: SH
  1. Connect the cruise control cable to the vehicle.
  2. Connect the cruise control cable bead to the fitting on the cruise control module ribbon.

  3. Object Number: 487406  Size: SH
  4. Pull the cruise control cable until the cable is taut.
  5. Turn the cruise control cable at the engine-end fitting in order to straighten the cruise control module ribbon, as needed.
  6. The ribbon must be flat and vertical.

  7. Slide the cruise control cable conduit over the ribbon.
  8. Install the tangs to the cruise control module housing.
  9. Ensure that the tangs snap securely into place.

  10. Ensure the cruise control cable is routed in the original position.

  12. Rotate the throttle cam lever in order to install the cruise control adjuster (3) onto the nail head on the throttle cam lever.
  13. Discard any cable with kinks or damage to the core wire.

  14. Pull the cable conduit toward the right side of the vehicle. Thread the cable through the slot in the round hole of the cable bracket.
  15. Push the cable adjuster locking button into the locked position.
  16. Important: Secure all of the components of the accelerator and the cruise control cables as specified. Ensure that the throttle linkage operates freely without binding between the idle position and the wide open throttle.

  17. Push the cable adjuster plunger into the locked position (2). Ensure that the white paint area is no longer visible.
  18. The lash should automatically be set at 0.0-1.0 mm (0.0-0.04 in) by the adjuster.

  19. Connect the electrical connector to the cruise control servo module.
