Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. This step tests for a short to ground in the signal circuit.

  2. This step tests for an open, for a high resistance, or for a short to voltage in the signal circuit. If the fuse in the jumper opens when you perform this test, the signal circuit is shorted to voltage.

Start the engine.

Does the engine oil pressure gage display that the engine oil pressure is within the specified range?

10-70 psi (69-483 kPa)

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the engine oil pressure sensor.
  3. Start the engine.

Does the engine oil pressure gage display at or above the specified value?

80 psi (550 kPa)

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper between the signal circuit of the engine oil pressure sensor and a good ground.
  3. Start the engine.

Does the engine oil pressure gage display at or below the specified value?

0 psi (0 kPa)

Test the signal circuit of the engine oil pressure sensor for an open, for a high resistance, or for a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for a high resistance or for a poor connection at the case ground of the engine oil pressure sensor. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the engine oil pressure sensor. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the instrument panel cluster (IPC). Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the engine oil pressure sensor. Refer to Engine Oil Pressure Sensor and/or Switch Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 4.3L.
